600 CFM Edelbrock Questions
hello
I am posting concerning some questions about the 600 cfm carb my dad and i picked up from a local tuner. i was reading some articles on here that said a 600 cfm is to big for a 305 chevy. We are doing a Swap from my '91 3.1 L v6 to a 305 V8-the v6 spun a bearing.I was planning on doing true duals of somesort on the car and headers-full exhaust-. I might but vortech heads on the 305 sometime. I know most will say im wasting my time with the 305 but i like the 305 for some reason. what other mods would i have to do to make full use of a 600 cfm Edlebrock performer carb. Please no one tell me to buy a 350 even though i know it's the logical choice
Thank You

Re: 600 CFM Edelbrock Questions
600 isn't too big for a 305. There's not a whole lot of good to be said about Edelbrock carbs though, except that they're cheap.

With 100% VE, you'd need to spin the 305 to about 6800 RPMs to flow a total of 600 CFM.
But, that standard carb size formula also assumes a single plane intake manifold, so a dual plane would cut that down to about 6400 RPMs.
So, a big cam, RPM intake manifold, full exhaust upgrade, fully ported heads with larger valves - you should be able to put a ventilation window in the side of the 305 block when the rod bolts cut loose. . .
Seriously, the secondaries of the carb only allow as much flow as the engine can use, so although it might be a little bigger than "needed", it won't be too much for a mild 305.

Re: 600 CFM Edelbrock Questions
I have an Edelborck 1406 600 and it's been great. very easy to tune. I haven't had any problems with it after my engine was retuned after rebuilding. my only problem is my fuel boiling. i wrapped the lines and it seems to be o.k. now. I haven't heard it. I think the mechanic put the line to close to the engine. My entire engine is black. Still have my 305 with an upgraded cam.

The 600 Edel. will work fine for you. I would recommend a Comp Cam 252 HE camshaft-206-206 duration .425-.425 lift 110 lsa. Had one in my 87 305 Formula and it was a great street cam. I even had the stupid computer and electric quadrajet and stock 2.73 rear gear. Idle was nice and smooth but throaty sounding and would rev to 5300 no problem.

Re: 600 CFM Edelbrock Questions
well i can get a 600 edelbrock for 50$ so how much would it cost to fix my quadrajet right now its idling at 2000 i want it to idle around 500

Re: 600 CFM Edelbrock Questions
It is hard to say how much. If it is idling at 2000 then maybe your high speed idle linkage is binding or your throttle linkage is in need of adustment. Not sure what type of intake you will be using either as your quadrejet factory intake will require an adapter to mount an Edel. afb carb. To have the quadrajet professionaly rebuilt would cost $200 plus depending on who rebuilds it. You might want to look in Jegs catalog for a quadrajet. $50 for a 600 Edel. afb sounds pretty cheap, wonder what kind of shape it is in???

You'll need more than $50 to get that Edelbrock on. A $50 Edelbrock is going to need a rebuild, so there's another $50 for the kit and cleaner. Plus you'll need a vacuum/mechanical advance distributor, a decent used one will be about $35-$50; you can get a new large cap HEI for less than $100. The Edelbrock won't fit on a stock intake manifold, so you'll need an adapter or aftermarket intake.

Re: 600 CFM Edelbrock Questions
I have an Edelbrock 600 carb on my 305. It HAD the GM Stock intake with an adapter plate, and ran pretty rich (black gassy plugs, anyone?). Now that intake has been replaced with a 2101 intake, a tune-up, and a reset idle/choke. We have now resumed that beautiful, throaty rumble the 305 is supposed to have...even if we do have a rich runner. At this point, I'm just happy the damn thing RUNS...the fact that it runs beautifully just makes me absolutely ecstatic!

Re: 600 CFM Edelbrock Questions
i have a edelbrock 600 on my stock 305. i havent had any problems. works great and i dont have a boiling fuel problem. i believe th air/fuels are backed out 1 to 1 1/2 turns. the say back them out until the engine idel quits raising but that still can give you problems. tighten the air/fuel until they bottom. dont over tighten. just till they touch bottom. back both of them out 2 turns. fire the car and go for a couple min short drive. come back and pull the number on plug....# 1 plug is usually easiest to get to. make sure the plugs arent turning black. they probably will be alittle but is a great starting point. from there if its black.. tighten a 1/4 turn.. drive it.. look for that perfectly clean burning plug and your good to go.

Re: 600 CFM Edelbrock Questions
Pulling the plug that way is only going to tell you how the mixture was in the last few seconds before you shut it down.
