holley classic or ultra carb??
Looking for a new carb for my '89 I bought the 650 street HP double pumper, and I really should have sacrificied the 1/2 a horsepower for a carb with a choke. It runs great with that carb though I tuned it to a T. Holley has the new ultra series carbs with electric chokes and 4 corner idles. How much better are they than the classic manual choke holley double pumpers?? Not sure if they are worth 150 more dollars..

I run a carb similar to the Ultra HP. Its a good carb overall, but since you live up North I would suggest something with a choke.

Re: holley classic or ultra carb??
An electric choke needs constant adjustment with temp changes. IMO this is because they don't have the coil in the manifold like any factory set up would and the temp above the carb can be drastically different then in the manifold depending on several variables. It is hard to get them adjusted so that they start well and actually come off when the motor is hot. Getting them to to start well is easy. Getting it adjusted so i actually is fully off is the hard part.
The manual adjust is the way to go. Put it on the when the motor is cold. Leave it on til the motor is warm and then take it fully off.
I have an HP style carb. As long as it is 10º C or warmer its not an issue. Cooler then that and you pretty much have to flood it to get it to start.

Re: holley classic or ultra carb??
yeah i never had a problem setting up any electric chokes either.. my chokeless street hp is awesome but it sucks having to warm up for 5 minutes before going anywhere.. The ultra is shiny, has 4 corner idle and electric choke dont know if its worth the extra 150 bucks if it has any better performance?? Or if i should get the classic then I might as well buy a used carb and rebuild it would be cheaper then.. running a choke cable aint that big a deal

Did you actually verify it is coming full off and what kind of weather fluctuations do you drive it in? Given your location the weather is the same.
My experience with aftermarket electrics is with Eddy's not holley's but i can't see there being a difference.
It isn't something you feel at the pedal either. Quite the opposite. Driveability is great. The choke doesn't stay full closed. It just seems to stay somewhat closed all the time if set to start in colder weather. To me a choke should be full off once the motor is hot. Anything else is wasting fuel.

Re: holley classic or ultra carb??
Yup, it always got to full open, whether it was -45*C in December or +30*C in August... just took a couple minutes longer to fully open in the colder months. Always started easy and ran well while warming up with a fast idle around 1400rpm. Choke always got to 'full open' by the time the engine got to about 150*F though, and I set it up with a thermostat and thermal fan switch to keep the motor between 190-200*F operating temp. Set the choke once and never had to tinker with it anymore after that.
This was with a Qjet, 3310 Holley, and 4779 Holley - all had elec chokes.

I would looked for a used carb. I found my Quick Fuel on Racing Junk for cheap and it was practically brand new.
