vapor canister after carb swap
Do I still need this vapor canister after putting a carb on my 90 camaro? I can smell gas under the hood when I open it if its been sitting for a while. I can,t see any gas leaks so I am assuming this is where the fumes are from.

Without the charcoal system, the car needs some way to vent the gas tank so it doesnt implode as the pump takes gas out of it (or at least make the car run bad since the pump will be working harder against the negative pressure).
If you took the canister out completely, the smell is coming from that metal tube on the frame that went from the gas tank to the char can. You could cap that off and get a vented gas cap. Then your gas smell will be coming from the back of the car. Or you could stick a filter on the tube so nothing gets sucked inside and clogs it, but then you have your smell under the hood.
I do the second, mostly because an old fuel filter was free rather than the ten bucks for a new gas cap. And the only reason I dont use my charcoal is because I accidently dropped a pulley on it and it smashed open during the engine swap.

Thanks for the reply, I still have the canister in place. The only piece missing is the vacuum hose because I dont know where to plug it in. That was why I asked if I even need it. Seems like I do from your answer.

You can put a fuel filter back at the tank.Where that metal line joins the rubber line near the tank, just disconnect it there, and put a fuel filter on the rubber line from the tank. This will vent the tank.Make sure you have the filter flow the right way around.I used a cable tie to secure the filter in position. You can use a vacuum cap on both ends
of the metal line to stop dirt getting in there.
Hope this helps,

I think the later cars had a different charcoal canister system using an electric control rather than all the crazy vacuum switches and crap on the carbed cars, so without the right stuff I'm not sure you could use the char system you have anyway.

Re: vapor canister after carb swap
i installed one, i got a older 70's cannister from a nova or older camaro...with in and out on the cannister only ,,,i connected the frame hard steel tube coming from the gas tank to the cannister "in" with a rubber fuel line tube, and the out on the cannister is supposed to be connected to the carb vaccuum..i find it doesn't smell fuel as much as it did before i did this..

That's what I did on my 92. I also grabbed the vacuum-activated switch that was on the old truck I got the canister from.
I also moved the canister inside the front bumper, under the passenger side headlights to get it out of sight.

92 RS why didnt you use the oem one on your car? I think mine is electronic style switch but using the older style seems to be easier.

Re: vapor canister after carb swap
i like the sound of using the older, non-electric canisters; been trying to ponder the vent deal with my (forever) in progress 5.3L swap, this may be the simple route I've been looking for.

Re: vapor canister after carb swap
The electronic style is controller by the ECM. Since I swapped to a carb, I'm not using the ECM for anything anymore so I disconnected all the sensors that would allow it to determine when to purge the canister.
