Leaking fuel after shutoff
Ok I have a 85 quadrajet on a 68 327. Niether are originall to car. When I shut off car I can hear fuel still going into the " bowls?". Then from there it leaks out. I know I need new carb, but I am poor and it is almost christmas with three young ones. What causes this. it is a new problem that developed today. It also I believe cause my car now to stall out. And exaust just stinks.

And my ignorance of carburetors allows me to not know how to check any of these things. I may as well just breack down and purchase a book. All I know is a lot of fuel stays or "leaks " in the area right between the two sets of holes. Then some how drips by my choke assembly onto my manifold.

Re: Leaking fuel after shutoff
Now it has been fine untill it froze here in WA State. I have no choke so I have to pump it to start it. I could not get it started for a week, though I tried a few times. Then when it finally got warm it put some gas down carb and it started but a little fire started. Went out quickly. Could either me flooding it while it was cold and pehaps I had some water in fuel that froze and expanded somewhere or the little fire caused this issue.

i believe ive heard some of the older guys say you can tap the carb bowl with a screw driver handle to get the float unstuck .. wont fix it but MIGHT let you know if thats the problem

Re: Leaking fuel after shutoff
If it is leaking out on to the intake from inside it is more than likely worn throttle shafts

I have that book, most of the stuff in it is about the non-computer ones, so it hasnt been much help to me. Somebody has a post thats probably a sticky with plenty of pictures of a rebuild, thats been a lot more helpful.

I need a non computer one. If yours was non computer would you feel the book would help you? I browsed through it, but I have no expierence at all with carbs. From what you have seen do you think it could be usefull for a carb novice?

Why are you switching to a non-computer one? If your car's an 85 and came with one, and assuming the system is still complete including the computer distributor and oxygen sensor and everything, it'll work for your engine whether its a 305, 350, 327.
About the book, if we're both talking about the SA Design series one, I'm looking through it and theres some info thats pretty good, but it seems most of it just covers the history of them and the changes over the years, how to mod some versions to include features other versions have, a confusing section of performance mods. The actual rebuild section wasnt too helpful since it tries to cover so many carb models. I got a lot more out of some threads on here.
Keep in mind that if you wanted to switch to a non computer one, you'll have to track down a vac advance distrubutor, adjustable advance kit and springs for it, take all the time adjusting that. Also you'll need to spend close to a hundred bucks on a torque converter lockup switch. If you still wanted to deal with all that, I'd really recommend just finding a used holley 4160 or 4150 anyway . For a carb novice (which would include me, I've only been doing this two years and have rebuilt a qjet once and holley once), the holley is just infinitely easier to figure out and rebuild.

Re: Leaking fuel after shutoff
My car was originally a tpi car. There is nothing original now. I do still have ecm, but distributer is vacum. I don't want to mess with it but I have no choice now. Just spits out fire now everytime I try to start it. I found in craigslist a 650 edlebrock for 60. I may just get that for now. I may at a later date go back to tpi, or I may just put a 427 in it, but that will have to wait untill construction iddustry picks up.

Re: Leaking fuel after shutoff
Yeah in that case the computer quadrajet would never work. As long as you have an intake with the dual pattern carb mounting holes then that edelbrock would be easier than tracking down and rebuilding an older qjet.
Whats the situation with your fuel pump? Original electric one with a regulator putting it down to 6ish psi? On-block mechanical pump? This could be a potential cause of your original problem if it wasnt set up right during the swap.

Re: Leaking fuel after shutoff
So I went out tonight again to check it out and when I press on gas it squirts out A LOT of fuel. Very audiblde and visual. I sprayed it a little while back with carb cleaner. Maybe I cleaned it too much??
