Re: hood clearance
The Quadrajet IMO is a Superior Carb. It flows more and is more gas efficient for example.

The stock q-jet is the superior carb by far.
Go the the FAQ forum and look for a thread about the differences between 305's and performance upgrades. It details what constitutes an "upgrade" to a factory 305. The carb is the last thing on the list - for some reason, people seem to put it first on their lists.

Re: hood clearance
Ok. well the qjet on my car for example does not run the way it should. Maybe when they were new they ran good but after 25 yrs they dont apparently. lol Last night I ran a stock GMC sierra with a 5.3 in it and it beat me which should not have happened. The reason for that is because when the motor is up in the revs the carb cant keep up. So imo theyre junk atleast this one is anyways.

Re: hood clearance
The carb is capable of flowing air for as long as the engine underneath will keep sucking it in. The stock exhaust, cam and heads limit an L69, not the stock carb.
A Vortec 5300 makes about 285 HP and 325 ft-lbs or so in a truck that could weigh as little as around 3900 lbs. An L69 has 190 HP and 240 ft-lbs, and weighs about 3400 lbs. You've got 1/3 less HP, 1/4 less torque, but you only weigh 1/8 less. No surprise you'd lose.

What air cleaner are you using?
Why the 2.5" exhaust? It's a bit smallish, even for a 305.

An HO carb shouldn't have flow capability issues. Some LG4 q-jets were flow limited, but not the L69's.
Like Aperion said, I wouldn't expect a cam'd/headers 3rd gen 305 to keep up with a 5.3 Sierra.

First, you mentioned you have the stock HO intake. It's the same thing as the lo po LG4 intake, for what that's worth. Are you saying the car came with the VIN G L69 engine?
If so, it produced 190 net flywheel HP. You've got a slightly better cam, and the headers will help. With an open hood, the open element air cleaner will flow slightly better than the stock dual snorkel HO air cleaner, but in real world conditions, it will actually cost you power. Your exhaust, however, if 2.5", is a little smaller than the stock HO system, so the only way it could help is if it is mandrel bent and has a better flowing cat & muffler than stock.
I would guess that you're probably in the 220-250 net flywheel HP range. Probably closer to the lower number. Should run better than stock, but that 5.3 truck still has more power.

That wasn't an H.O. then, just an LG4. About 165 HP when it was stock.
