Choke won't kick off, Elec Q Jet

Hi, The choke on my Elec Q Jet won't kick off, The carb was rebuilt Prof years ago, but the car doesn't see much use these last ten years, The other day day I started it up and the choke would not kick off, If I shut it off manualy it would just kick back on the next time I gave it gas.

I do plan to add a 650 or 750 Double Pumper this summer, But for now I would like for this carb to work, Can I Disable the choke? Thanks

Is there power to the choke coil? What is the choke light doing?

Choke light isn't doing anything, I have not checked the power yet, What would it be keyed power? can I just stick a test light on it or do I need to use a meter?

I had the same problem, just bought a manual choke cable and converted the electric to manual. Yes you can disable the choke. Just take the whole choke assembly out. Or you could get some wire and tie the choke open.

The light doesn't come on when you turn the key on before starting, and doesn't go out when the engine starts?

The choke Doesn't come on it never has, It may flash once in a while but in the 15 Plus years I have had the car It rarely has come on, is it suppose to ? I would like to Disable it or get it working in till I can replace the carb, The car is put away at the moment for winter and it is not that easy to get to.

The choke light is on when the engine is off. If not, you have an electrical problem.

SO you saying the choke light should come on when I turn the key to the on post but don't start the car? Where should the Elec be coming from for the choke?

Re: Choke won't kick off, Elec Q Jet

Would i just zip tie the linkages to keep it from shutting? Does the choke control anything else, or just the flapper? If I drilled the rivets out what does turning it do? Would i have to put screws back in it?

If it is n't to cold out would the car still start with out a choke?

Re: Choke won't kick off, Elec Q Jet

Sounds like the choke is mis-aligned or sticking. You can buy a choke rebuild kit. You can also buy a carb rebuild kit that has the choke parts in it. If you do a search here on the site you should be able to find how to set your choke. I would also listen to Aeperion, he helped me tune my carb over the internet.

Going to a 650-750 double pumper is harder because you'll need to switch distributors to a non-computer controlled distributor as well. I love my Qjet (It's a 750cfm carb) and haven't had any problems with it since I got it tuned right.

Re: Choke won't kick off, Elec Q Jet

Put a test light on the choke, if it has power make sure the coil is adjusted properly. I just went through this with the 84 LG4 i just bought. The coil was bad from being modified by the previous owner to be adjustable. When I received the new choke From Ebay that I only paid $25 for It was not adjustable and only fit one way. Works like a champ. The car was so slow when I bought it But I just thought thats how they were. My 86 Is a 12 high twelve car so I just assumed that is how it was supposed the be. Then I put on the new choke coil and I had my secondaries back. I adjusted my av. With my timing bumped up to 8 initial this little engine runs pretty good. But i'm not saying my v6 grand prix won't embarrass it. It just runs 10 times better than it did.

check for power first
use some wd-40 on all the linkage making sure its not binding.
the plug on mine is in the three o'clock position. Not adjustable
if it still doesn't work the purchase the new coil on ebay

hope this helps

Re: Choke won't kick off, Elec Q Jet

I'll check for power when It warms up a bit and I get up to the barn, If It isn't something simple I'll just try and bypass the choke, for a bit, I want to try a different combo to see if it will fix my Backfire on decel issue. My Sec are def not opening at the moment.
