Installing edelbrock performer series 1406 need help

I have a 87 trans am 305. I switched the carb from a Rochester to edelbrock... well Im trying to anyways. I know a lot of people are gonna say why would you get rid of the Rochester. I've read all sides of the argument and I went with edelbrock cause it seems easiest and I'm new to this.
So when installing the carb onto the adapter I realized there's something blocking the linkage. I'm new to cars so can someone indentify the piece that's blocking it and what it does and also explain how I can make this work cause it won't sit down on adapter because the linkage is blocked by that piece. Image below.

The thing blocking my carb from going on is right next to upper left hand corner of my adapter for carb. Thanks

EGR valve, basically recycles hot exhaust air into your intake.

looks like you're getting rid of all your computer controlled gear anyway so you might as well pull it and throw a block off plate on there.

youll need to get rid of that computer controlled distributor while you're at it, and then workout a lockout solution for your 700r4

If it's a electric choke do I still need that or can I chuck it or replace it with one with different dimensions or move it's location?

Not sure if this is Virginia only inspection rule but a car 25 years older is exempt from some emissions testi think. If I remove the egr will I still be "allowed" to drive it without getting fined for bypassing regulations. Any info on that would be great. With the egr my carb won't fit so I need to get rid of it.

Read this: https://www.thirdgen.org/carbswap/
Some of it pertains to what you are trying to do.

Re: Installing edelbrock performer series 1406 need help

Can anyone send a link to a good place to buy it or a specific company. Would any local stores like autozone, advanced auto parts, or napa have the correct one. I need one soon because I leave soon and won't be able to work on it for a week after I leave. Thanks

Re: Installing edelbrock performer series 1406 need help

I see you have a Firebird. They have less underhood clearance than Camaros.
With that adapter/spacer, carb, and even a dropped base air cleaner (the stock one will not fit without an adapter/spacer there also), you might find that you cannot close your hood.
An open element air cleaner will mean that the engine is now sucking in heated air from the engine compartment, instead of cool air from outside, like the way the factory air cleaner does. Also DO NOT use one of those Edelbrock Pro Flow foam air cleaners. If the engine ever diesels, fuel will get sprayed out of the carb and onto that foam element. If it ignites you have a fire which quickly spreads to your hood insulation.

Re: Installing edelbrock performer series 1406 need help

Im not in America but from what ive seen from other posts, autozone have them. on a carbed motor its a 5 minute job.

Distributor can be basically anything for a small block chev with a coil on the cap.

as for the 700r4 trans, do a google search and youll find a bunch of lockup kits available for such purposes - i run the rebel wires 700r4 lockup kit, i think it took me longer to get the car up safely on stands than to actually install it.

Re: Installing edelbrock performer series 1406 need help

<sigh> This will pretty much never work right, but hey you can't say we didn't warn you.

Throw away the spacer and get a square bore intake. Oh wait, it's an 87 so a standard SBC intake wont bolt on without egging out a few holes... Hmm... So I guess Cowl hood? But that's not in the budget, so let's just cut a big stupid hole for now. OK, so now it fits under the hood, but the trans doesnt shift right because the TV cable is all misaligned, and the throttle cable binds. Car runs like doodoo, looks like doodoo with a huge jagged off-center hole in the hood, guess we'll just park it behind Uncle Ted's machine shed on the farm, and get something else to drive.

Or you know, get a Qjet for a 1980 Caprice, and a vacuum advance distributor, and everything will fit perfect. Tough choice.

Some folks just don't want to HEAR it!
They want that shiny Edelbrock "racing" carb on that 305!

No matter that is still a 750 cfm like that bad ol' Rochester
and requires a headache full of mods to get it to fit and work!

Why not just buy a new/reman EME Quadrajet that would be a
"plug n play" install and be done with it?

yeah figured this part out. I took the advice of everyone above and decided to go with the Rochester. I got one that was rebuilt from summit and it was 10x as pretty as that edelbrock and it went in perfectly. Thank you for the help everyone just wish I never ordered that edelbrock.

Toss it on ebay or list it on the for sale section I am sure someone will buy it.
