Thinking of getting a convertible

since my GN is nearing completion (spring, 2012), I would like to get a few leads on another project and was thinking a iroc or z28 convertible (maf car) since I've wanted one since high school. I'm into doing the work to save one so I'm kind of looking for one of those "diamond in the rough" cars. I'd like something complete and stock and I could care less if it needs mechanical work and paint, as long as there isn't a ton of rust repair to do. I went down that road with the GN and I don't have the patience for that. I have no idea what I'm looking at spending. I've seen nice drop tops go from anywhere from 4k to 10k, but I'm not looking for a trailer queen. I do have color preferences but I won't let that stand between me and a good deal. I live by the ia/sd border. If anyone knows of anything or can at least tell me what I should expect to pay please post and help me out.

Re: Thinking of getting a convertible

Zup man. Best advice I can give you is to look in the cars for sale on here (there are a few verts for sale), and look up on auto trader (where I found mine). MAF cars will be 87-90 I think as the 91-92's (can't remember if the 90's are also but I don't think so) are MAP cars.

Unfortunately what to pay is a little dicey. To me I would have paid 3 times what I did if I had the money because I wanted one bad enough. As fate and fortune would have it I only had what I did and thus managed to get what I got. As a general idea though I would say around $2500 - $5000 for a "needs work", and between $6K-$12 for a nice complete car. I think BlueZee has a 92 Z28 Heritage Vert for sale for $7K. And Honestly if I wasn't paying for mine at the moment I would probably bring it home for my wife. If you look long enough and don't mind a drive you can find some really good deals (what I consider mine to have been). I drove 400+ miles to buy mine from a dealership who didn't know or care what they had (92 Z28 Purple Haze Vert with 100834 Miles on it). I walked away with an all original car (with the exception of the rims, tires, and alarm system), complete, and unmolested car in excellent condition for $5725. There are a few things to fix (rip in drivers leather seat, paint chips on hood, paint fade and clear coat coming of on trunk and tonnu, but otherwise the car is in perfect condition.

Hope this helps.

That's somewhat reassuring. Until someone comes forward with something I'll just keep my eyes open and keep saving money. I'm sure it's not going to be an easy find in my area, that's why I thought I'd post here where the rest of the third gen nuts are

Re: Thinking of getting a convertible

Look at the rear footwells very closely. I bought mine knowing they were rusting out a little bit, but it was worse than I thought when I pulled the carpet. The rear drains were plugged with dirt and leaves so the water ran into the rear floor pans instead of out the back of the rockers. I caught it before it got really bad, lucky me

And for what it's worth, I bought mine for $2500 the way it looked in my sig pic below. The hood was changed to a Sunoco fiberglass prior to me purchasing it though, didn't get any new pics while I drove it for the summer and then tore it apart for a rebuild (built motor, T5 swap, LS1 discs, torsen 3.42's, etc). It even came with the LS1 calipers in boxes, Spohn SFCs, Tubular everything front & rear, lowering coils, Tokico Blues, on and on and on Just need to find a motivated seller!

Re: Thinking of getting a convertible

Wow that's cool! And you even found one in black. I suppose I'll try to keep saving until I find one. I've had lots of 3rd gens so I know where to check for trouble spots, pretty much the same as a gbody. If I could fine one in blue or black I'd be very happy with that and if it was all stock I'd be even happier.

Re: Thinking of getting a convertible

I'll keep an eye out for you. There was a nice modded 87 (Maroon) for sale near me for $4000 that supposably had 15 grand invested in it...selling all the aftermarket stuff would've put you in the black (on paper AND paint )

Mine was in a fender bender at one point, but at least I have a regular title!

Re: Thinking of getting a convertible

Sounds good. I also posted in the cars wanted section. I looked on cl last night and couldn't believe how much the price of the these convertibles have dropped in the last 10 years. You can get a driver for 2500 and a clean one for 5+, amazing. I tried buying one when I got out of high school and couldn't find one for less than 10k!

If you're willing to have it shipped, there are usually a few on CL in the Phoenix AZ area. Prices are all over the place depending on mileage though.

Re: Thinking of getting a convertible

I've seen quite a bit for sale on ebay and craigslist. Some looked pretty clean for around 4-5k. I always wanted a vert myself and after owning 2 hard tops I just had to get one sooner or later. I think black is a very common color in verts. Blue would be awesome if you can find a clean one. Good luck dude.

Re: Thinking of getting a convertible

I live in Iowa, take a look at my profile for some pics of my vert, I have been thinking about selling it for the past few years and would let you take a look if interested. Let me know. I am not actively trying to sell it so its not going anywhere

Re: Thinking of getting a convertible

As mentioned earlier I'm selling a Z03 Z28 heritage car that is black with red stripes and interior. It's in the camaros for sale section with some pictures. It has a lot of brand new stuff like fuel pump, top, seats, refinished stock alloy wheels, etc. I'm starting it at $7,000.
