Ihave the 1986 Pontiac Trans AM Autoform number AFC6-00576. It now has 13,100 milesgo

I have just purchased this 86 Trans Am from gateway classic Tampa. I need help from some one who may have had this happen. The hatch to store the top will not open up. Using the button on dash, it clicks but will not release. Anyone have this happen. The trunk lid would not open either but fixed that myself.
Through trunk, can see the latch. The key one does not work either. The car has now 13,125 miles on ir and needs many things fixed, air condition, the lid, power steer4ing pump, calleber left rear and other things I have not found yet probably. One item, I would never buy a classic car from ateway Classics. They only use info owner gives them which to say, buyer look out. This is the second to last autoform car converted and was indeed kept by one of the original owners for tewn years. It has 15 auto form broucheres that really do not say much. I will just use the Tag AFC6-00576

Can't help you with your issue, but want to welcome you to the Forum. I am sure others will have ideas on how to help.

In the meantime, lease note, your experience with auto dealers or brokers is not uncommon. What do you expect? Not like they had any real interest in the vehicle, as it was probably consigned, and they do rely on whatever the owner told them, right or wrong. Correct or incorrect.

I had a 1984 Camaro autoform. The manual release is under the driver's side hatch. You need to lift it as much as possible then pull the release similar to the hood. If you replace the hatch cover struts it will make it easier in the future to lift its pretty heavy.

Hi, would you explain that a little more? Is it in the trunk Driver side?

Thanks AFC6-00576

So if you push the release button, right behind the drivers seat lift the hatch as much as you can. You should be able to see the release if you can’t reach it get a metal coat hanger to pull the latch. Then it will open. Lube the latch and you will probably have to replace both shocks that hold it up. Mine both were shot and oil from the shocks leaked out.

Did check behind the driver seat and reached up toward the drive shaft tunnell and found something. Pulled on it and a spring came out so assume someone had tried that before, came loose or what ever and then just tucked the spring back up there.
The body shop I am taking the TA to had talked about drilling out the plastic rivets and just take out that whole panel behind the seats and just put in new plastic rrvets after it is fixed and will make sure the manual release works.

Thank You so very much again.

I took it to A-1 Auto Body in Englewood Fl and they did a great job. Thier painter, father to young man that owns the shop, was able to finally take the latch apart by some reaching it. He is much younger than I am! Many of the nuts, screws bolt were loose anyway and got it opened and corrected it for opening as from the factory so who ever had this car before did not do any maintenace on it. To bad but it will be back to all things working and this labor day weekend in a local car show, won a trophy!

Hi AFC6-00576,

Could you please post a photo of your SPID label (Service Parts Identification label)? It is in the center console.

I am searching for an Auto-Form-specific RPO. I believe that I have identified the 1984 RPO, but I do not know if it was used in 1986.

Here is an example of a 1986 Trans Am SPID label with the list of three-character RPOs:
