Not sure if I posted somewhere farther back (memory is the first, or second thing to go, I forget).
83 Z28, 305 HO, one electric fan (may be an 84 since it has an automatic transmission)
86 Iroc 305 TPI, one electric fan (the black car)
86 Iroc 305 TPI, one electric fan (the red car)
83 Z28, 305 HO, one electric fan (may be an 84 since it has an automatic transmission)
86 Iroc 305 TPI, one electric fan (the black car)
86 Iroc 305 TPI, one electric fan (the red car)

I'm having the same problem with my fan, also the temp guage reads hot one minute then is fine the next, and the radiator isn't hot but I have heat in the car. Maybe a bad sending unit or guage?

The air dam was responsible for me getting a nice car cheap. The guy newer figured out the heating problem and thought he was selling a blown head car. The air dam is very important!

Re: If you own an '84, '85 or '86>>
I came into possession of an 83 Z28 H.O. with a single electric fan. It's a factory 5 spline, curved vane that joins at the ends to a circle. There is a lack of 83's with the electric fan on here. I am under the impression that all of the HO cars came with them and the larger capacity radiator in 83. I am guessing it's identical to the 84 and beyond with this setup. I am picking up this car next week and I know that the fan is not working. Instead of wiring in a relay switch to the ignition like my 89 had I want to fix this before driving it home.
Here is what I know. (Or what I think I know)
1) The fan relay is on the driver's side firewall and is part number 14078902.
2) The air conditioning needs to be plugged in, as the fan runs thorough it. (I'm not 100% sure that it NEEDS to be plugged in. I know that the fan automatically kicks on when the A/C does, but I am surprised that it would need that connection to function.)
3) The temperature sender is the signal for the ECM to trigger the fan, so it needs to be functioning well.
So basically, the temp sender tells the ECM that the engine is hot, it sends a signal to the relay. The relay closes the connection and the fan turns on. Correct?
Questions.
1) Is the temp sender for the fan the same one that sends voltage to the temp gage?
2) Is it the one that is usually located on the thermostat housing or manifold?
3) Is there any main components that I am not aware of?
4) Does someone explain this system in detail anywhere? I have ordered the Factory Service manual, but it is not going to get to me quick enough beforehand to prepare with it, and I'm not even sure the 83 manual will include the electric fan.
Thanks!

However, 1 and 2. No, it's not the same. The Temp sender for your gauge is on the drivers side, below the number 3 cylinder. The Fan switch which tells the single electric can to turn on is on the passenger side above the dipstick, just forward of the number 6 cylinder. There is also a sensor in the thermostat housing that needs to be hooked up.
3. The main components are: Fan, Relay, Fan switch, wiring.
4: The AC is part of the circuit. Do a search, you'll find it on the boards, this is a hot topic it seems. Yes, "pun" intended!
If the fan turns on with the AC on, the circuit works and the fan motor is good, so your issue is most likely either the fan switch on the passenger side or wiring.
Make sure the fan switch is plugged in, many times the wire either melts off from exhaust heat or gets cut because people don't know what it is. If the connector is not plugged in, before you plug it in, ground the connector and turn the car to "run" without starting it. The fan should come on. If it does, plug it in and run the car up to operating temp to see what happens. The fan should work. If it doesn't, you have a bad fan switch.
If the fan doesn't come on when the circuit is grounded, then you have to test the relay and wiring since you already know the fan motor is good (it comes on with the AC). In this case the AC energizes the relay so I would tend to think the relay is good. However, on my car, the pins on the connector that goes to the relay get pushed and don't make contact with the relay connectors. Try re-seating the relay and see what happens in this instance.
Hope this helps!

I have an 85 original 305 carburantes, automatic, mechanic fan now it's a 383 carbd, stick shift (t5) and electric single fan(factory stile) now my question is on non factory electrical fan is the dark green/white wire coming from the ecm to control the electric fan also available?

Unless your car originally came with the electric cooling fans, then no, I don't think that circuit will be in the car. For 1985 that would mean an L69 or LB9 equipped car.

What do u mean a temperature switch (which one do u have a part # or something) I've been using one they sell at AutoZone that has a prong u stick in the rad then u can adjust what temp u want it to turn on so it becomes kind of an automated system but lately it's overheated a couple times n I've notice the fan ain't on which leads me to believe that that part it's malfunctioning thanks 4 the input guys
