no I don't think the air dam has anything to do with your problem I think you didn't tight enough the bolts when you changed the thermostat cause that is what happened to me when I changed my thermostat try to tight the bolts again and if possible try to get a new gasket when you do go from one bolt to the other don't tighten one and then the other do it simultaniusly like make a couple of turns on one bolt and then the other like that both at the same time you'll get a better result that is what I did on mine when I changed it like I said before the same problem happened to me hope this helps.

If your car's "smoking" because it's boiling over (at the reservoir or radiator) then it's getting too hot and your air dam will definitely help. Also check your radiator fans and make sure they're coming on.

If it overheated immediately after changing the t-stat you may have had air trapped behind it not allowing coolant to reach it to open it. This is a very common, short-term problem when changing one out. As soon as the t-stat warms up enough to open, it should work fine. Some recommend drilling some small holes in the new t-stat to prevent this. You can search to find out more on drilling one.

If it's leaking somewhere-find out where and fix that.
