Temp Gauge Maxes Out

Water temp gauge was working but after the first drive after getting it on the road I noticed that it stopped working. I popped the hood and notcied that the guy that had the car before me had threaded the wire around the power steering linkage and it had been yanking out and thrown against my headers and melted through and disconnected. I re-ran wire and when I turned on the car the needle buries itself at the 250 marked.

Anyone know what would cause this? Did it short out on the headers? Could this be fixable ot get a new gauge?

Re: Temp Gauge Maxes Out

My 1986 Camaro Z28 does the slam to the max temp some times when turning the key. Oddly enough when I press on the key forcing it into the ignition it triggers back down all by itself. So might try that and see if that works, if that does. Not sure whats shorting cause I haven't gotten that far myself.

Re: Temp Gauge Maxes Out

when I turned on my car the needle would sore too, replaced the sensors didn't help. then I replaced the gauge it self and now it works now. so im pretty sure it was the gauge that went bad.

Re: Temp Gauge Maxes Out

i am having a similar issue. I was having a problem w/ the needle getting stuck when i turned the key. Replaced the sensor and now the gauge works but only reaches above the 100 degree mark just as the 190 degree thermostat is about to open. anyone have any suggestions on this?
