Heater core replaced, Heater broken?

My heater core in my 84 Firebird ended up crapping out on me a few months after I bought the car, coolant on the floor and all, so I finally got around to replacing it today and when I ran the new coolant through the system, all went well, I let the car idle for ten minutes and the heater was blowing warm and the car wasn't overheating so I assumed all was well. I started driving and not even a minute up the street, my car starts smoking inside the cabin and I can smell something burning so I immediately pulled over and was stumped. No hoses blew, the heater itself wouldn't turn on at that point. Any suggestions on what happened?

Check the connectors on the back of the back of the console mounted HVAC controller. I've seen the connectors / switches burnt-up & melted on more than a couple Heater/AC controllers in the past.........
