What performance chip to get?

Hi, i have a 1986 Camaro I-ROC Z/28 that is essentially stock. I want to put in a performance aftermarket computer chip and i don't know the best one to use. I was browsing Summit.com and looking at them and there are so many different ones out there, is there any one of them that stands out as the one i should get?

Thanks.

Re: What performance chip to get?

None of the above. Dont waste your $$$. You could advance the timing globally about 3-4 degrees.
Add headers exhaust. Gears.

Save $$$ for whatever you like.

Re: What performance chip to get?

There is little to no support for aftermarket chips here. They do have their limits and aren't always the way to go. For example nitrous doesn't work with aftermarket chip. I have a hypertech chip and haven't had any issues (has run really well for 15 years)but I've never had a stock chip to compare. Check tbichips.com

Get into chip burning or find a RELIABLE person to help you
Or look into EBL
Or LS swap it. <---what i decided on. The LO3 was never enough.

Re: What performance chip to get?

Interesting, i have talked to mechanics and some car guys who say that chipping it is a relatively cheap way to get a little more power and performance from the engine. I don't have the cash for headers right now or i would already have done it.

Re: What performance chip to get?

The local speed shop told me the same thing when I bought my GTA in 2005.

I have an aftermarket JET chip in my bird. All chips do for our cars is make them run rich. Believe it or not, the best tune for your stock car is the one GM gave you.

Upgrade your car first. Then you can get a custom aftermarket chip to support your upgrades. Places like http://www.gmtuners.com/ can hook you up with a custom chip to your specs.

If you have a TPI motor and you want to get a few extra ponies in the sub-$100 range, I'd start with a cold air intake (which you might not need because you have a Camaro).

I'm running the SLP in my car. I've heard good things about the Holley.

It's probably not power you will feel, but it will improve performance.

There's some small changes in the off the shelf, one size fit's all type chips but I have yet to see one that was worth half the dollars spent.

My bad, I didn't realize the issues. When I was looking at tuning options they seemed like a decent option. Either way I definitely stand behind the last 3 lines of my post.

Re: What performance chip to get?

i meant theres people who have luck but ive heard of and witnessed many bad bad stories, yes in sorts his good witnesses are much better than the jet chips and what not but if you need someone to tune it go with someone who has experience, eagle mark helped me out alot when doing mine as i needed it done and was having computer issues otherwise i would done the learning curve and datalogged it myself which i still plan to do.

Re: What performance chip to get?

I will second the no aftermarket chips recommendation. Some genius put a JET chip in my truck and all it does is run like a rich fat pig now and to boot they didn't put the stock chip on piggyback like you are supposed to so I had no knock filter or limp home function. Unfortunately for me it has the 7060 ECM which is one of GM's rarest and it has a 350 which is rarer yet (1 ton dually). I bought and am waiting on the equipment to burn chips just to see what a stock tune would do for me then eventually improve it as I go on.
