Tunerpro Connection Issues
First, let me say thanks to all of you for sharing your vast knowledge. So far all of the information in the archives and faqs have helped me get a 730 to run a BMW 3.5 with 10:1 pistons and a lumpy cam. Yes, its a screwy combination of American electronics and German parts, but its better than the Bosch D-Jet that came on the car (and Daimler Chrysler does it every day!). I'm still playing around with the idle and trying to get consistent blms, but the thing runs like a champ already.
Now -- my question/problem. I'm using Tunerpro with Craig's AutoProm. After sorting out some initial connection issues I was able to tune and datalog without much trouble. After two weeks my computer consistently recognizes the AutoProm and I have no problems programming it. However, I cannot get the ALDL to connect in Tunerpro. At first, it connected consistenty on the first or second try, then became more difficult to connect (like 10-15 tries before it would link up) and now won't connect at all. I haven't changed any settings anywhere and I've been through all the faqs for datalogging, settings, etc. I'm stumped and I really need to datalog to get everything dialed in. Any ideas? Thanks

Is this 8D? Make sure you have TunerPro configured to use AutoProm-mode for the ALDL connection.

730 with $8D. It is configured correctly for AutoProm. The AutoProm is also configured correctly. Strange part is that it was working okay, but deteriorated over time to the point that it won't connect at all.

Electrical issue? Also, you might try hardware passthrough (hor. switch away from the USB port - don't forget to configure TunerPro for MAX232 and the correct COM port for your USB driver). If that works, we can go from there. I doubt it will, though.

Perhaps, but I have checked and rechecked the connections a dozen times and they seem fine. The ECU is right next to the diagnostic connector, so we're only talking about a foot of wires into the ECU. It will flash codes, which seems to indicate the ground (BD1) and test terminal (GE12) are working. That only leaves the serial data wire which basically comes out at BA8 and then I split it to both E and M on the connector. I'll check that one again, but its all there and in the right place. Is there an easy way to see whether the serial data wire has a signal?
MAX232 did not work when I tried several days ago. I can try again.

Sounds like something else is up, then. Make sure the vertical switch is centered.
Also, try a different logging software package (try the trial version of Datamaster) in passthrough mode. If that doesn't work either, we know TunerPro is not the issue and the issue is either the way you have the AutoProm configured or an electrical issue.
Remember, passthrough mode is:
- horizontal switch away from the USB port
- TunerPro set to use MAX232, with the correct COM port to match your USB driver
AutoProm mode is
- horizontal switch towards the USB port
- TunerPro set to use AutoProm as the ALDL interface type
In both modes you should have the vertical switch centered. Other software packages will only work in passthrough mode.

Thank you for your help. I will try that and see what works. I did upgrade Tunerpro recently, but I'm pretty sure the ALDL worked after the upgrade.

Still no luck with Datamaster. I downloaded the 8D version, so I know that's correct. There's a cable test button which reports that the ALDL adapter is working, but the serial data is not recognized and the ECU may not be supported. That can't be right - I'm using a '730 with 8D. When I unplug the ALDL connector, then is says that the ALDL adapter is working, but there's no signal and the ECU must be unplugged. So, I looks like its making a connection, but the data is no good?!? What could cause this? I checked my wiring again and it seems fine. I tried several different COM port settings, but I'm no expert on that stuff so I could be missing something. Any ideas? Thanks.
