async vs sync

Just curious what I should be seeing when switching to async mode. I was told it could go pretty lean in places or there may not be much change. Well last night I burned a chip with it in async and drove it about 30 miles and it did feel quite a bit smoother, didn't have the weird transition I felt before when it switched from sync to async and the VE's really didn't change any. It did feel slightly less responsive though. I made a small timing change, about one degree less in the cruise rpm and KPA area and went and drove it this afternoon and it all of the sudden went extremely lean, especially near idle but otherwise ran fine. Felt very smooth and responsive for being so lean. Just curious why it would run very lean today yet last night it didn't seem to have any change on it.
