Painless VSS + 16197427 = no VSS reading.

Painless VSS + 16197427 = no VSS reading.
I'm using a painless VSS (2 pulse older version of the 60115), I am using a 16197427 PCM to run a Crossfire equipped 305 and 4L60E, in a 1971 Chev pick up.
The only issue I have (other than the fuel pump dieing on me earlier today), is that the ECM does not read a VSS signal.
I have used this VSS with a 1227747, with one wire connected to ground, the other connected to the optical input, it worked fine then. I also had it connected to a 1227730 running S_AUJP for a short while before the owner of that vehicle got the 4ppr VSS, also a painless.
I am using $0D, and have the "VSS not from DRAC" bit selected, since that's what some threads on here indicate needs to be done when this PCM is swapped in place of a '7747.
I am using this VSS due to needing the cable drive for the trucks original speedo.
Now the only thing I haven't tried yet, that came to me after coming home and leaving the truck on the hoist until I get a new pump in the morning, is adding a pull up resistor.
Has anyone used this combination before? Any insight?

Upon more research (some information was already saved on my HDD  ), it seems that the 40pulse per revolution signal is needed for tranny functions to work properly.
Arg, this means find a, by the sounds of it rare, VSS that has a cable drive as well, or adding a 40 tooth wheel and sensor to the diff.

If labor time/cost isn't an object the cheapest fix would be speedo gut swap. Electronic speedo guts from a 90's old-body 4l80E van are fairly compact.
At $250 for a Cable-X I just think of it as a $250 shift kit that gives the same shift every time, eliminates the evil TV cable, and no more ATF baths for trans calibration changes.

The 4l60e should have the VSS you're missing for tranny control, you don't need an aftermarket VSS.
I assume it's a 4x4 and that's where you're getting the mechanical speedo cable from for the 2 pulse optical sensor in back of your speedo. That will work just fine for the cruise input and ECM VSS input, I'm using that setup with a 700r4. On a 4l60e or 4l80e the tranny VSS signal comes from a sensor on the tranny, not the transfer case (or tranny output shaft).

--==Update==--
I ended up putting the 40 PPR reluctor wheel back in the tranny on the output shaft. I added a DRAC as well.
I haven't driven it yet, but my Grandfather drove it home from the shop and said that it felt smoother now that the PCM is getting a VSS signal. I think it's a bit low in reading, since the highest I saw on my test drive around the building was 7 MPH, and I'm sure I was going much faster than that. Now I just need to calibrate the DRAC.
Now I just need to get an electronic speedo. I may have one kicking around.
This is a 2WD Pro Street (look) 1971 Chev truck. Here is an old picture of it behind my Jimmy:

Re: Painless VSS + 16197427 = no VSS reading.
Ha! Your grandfather has a cooler car than you!!!
You would be right by saying it felt better with VSS. Every conversion I have done without then changed to with was better driving and very noticable stedier idle in gear etc... really noticed the differance on idle in a rock crawler I had. Much more stable idle and just off idle while crawling the rocks. now these were all 7747. I thought the 427 had to have VSS or it would go limp home or? Just from what I read, not sure. If you turn off the code for VSS on a 7747 it runs fine and never had a complaint, but then when added VSS it was better. HTH!
