How to successfully burn 27SF512 chips with a Willem

I know a lot of people have had problems with the Willem burners and SST 27SF512 chips. Through a lot of forum reading, and some trial and error, this is how I got my Willem PCB 5.0 using software version 0.98D8 to successfully burn the 27SF512 chips. Please note, if your computer, burner, or chip goes poof in a spectacular cloud of smoke, it's not my or Thirdgen.org's fault. With that being said if you follow these steps you shouldn't have any problems.

First ditch the USB power cord and use a 12 volt DC power adapter with at least a 300ma or higher current rating. You'll need to change the jumper I have circled in green from VUSB to VDC.

Select 27SF512 for the chip your working with and set the dip switches as shown on the screen. Switches 3, 5, 7, 8, and 9 will be on and the rest will be off.

Set jumpers J6 and J7, circled in red, for a Vpp voltage of 12.5 volts. J6 goes on the bottom two pins of the three pin header and J7 goes on the top two pins of it's respective three pin header. If you don't get this right it'll fry the chip, don't ask how I know.

Circled in orange is jumper J8 remove it and set it aside, you'll need it to be able to erase the chip. This sets the Vcc voltage to 6.2 volts.

Circled in yellow are jumpers J1 and J2. Place the jumper for J1 across the bottom two pins of the 3x2 header. Take the jumper you removed from J8 and place it vertically across the two pins on the right of the J1 3x2 header, this sets it to be able to erase the chip. Place the jumper for J2 across the top two pins of the J2 4x2 header.

You are now set to erase the chip.

To burn the chip remove the jumper placed vertically on the right two pins of J1 and set it aside. Leave the remaining jumpers and dip switches as is.

One tip; the Willem burner is in an unstable state until all of the jumpers and dip switches are set. DO NOT place a chip into the burner until everything is setup and you are ready to click on the erase or burn buttons. If you place the chip in the burner before everything is set you'll likely fry the chip. In the picture it's set exactly how it should be to erase a chip only difference in setup for burning the chip is the jumper placed vertically on J1, it is removed.

This is a nice write up, thanks. I put the link to it in Chapter 3 of the Tuning Guide book sticky.

Thanks for the kind words....

One thing I forgot to mention was in the lower right hand corner of the software the drop down menu "Check type" needs to be changed from 16 bit ADD to 32 bit CRC. If not the chip won't verify correctly.

Don't forget to set the offset to 8000 for SST 27SF512 chips!

Yep forgot about that. I use a 7427 PCM that uses the whole chip so no need for a offset. I think the TBI computers require a different offset because they use even less space.

Yes, the offset required is very much dependent on the size of PROM being used, and the size file being programmed to that PROM.

On my old Willem, I replaced the jumper with a switch, to make it easier to go between erase and program.

The Willem programmers don't burn TBI chips. (2732a). What version of Willem do you have?

They do. I have a Willems that will, and my previous version did as well.

Willems are one of the most versatile programmers around, especially for the price point.

I know the Pocket Programmer works. In the Willem ,the only option on mine was for a 2732 (pcb3). IIRC, when I tried that it didn't work ,even at 21 volts.

Re: How to successfully burn 27SF512 chips with a Willem

This is my contribution to everyone trying to burn sst chips with willem.

The information is very scarse over the internet i´ve searched for days, and finnaly ive burned a ship successfully, that can be read by my ecu (if you burn a chip for your honda and wont rev past 4k its not reading the chip).
This is how i made it work:

Usefull video:
- "Willem Burner How-To - SpiderRPM Honda Tuning"

Instructions:
1-Connect Willem with parallel cable/lpt cable both ends. (USB-LPT wont work)
-Power willem with USB Cable (Male-male)

2-Go to bios change Parallel/LPT port settings to EPP.

3-Download 0.97ja software version and io.dll fix here: http://benryves.com/products/remappediodll

"Install the Willem EPROM/FLASH Programmer software normally, then copy io.dll, io.ini and inpout32.dll to its installation directory (it should contain the current io.dll). Open io.ini and change the default address (0x378) to the base address of your parallel port." (Should be that easy, follow the instructions on the site)

4- Open 0.97ja program execute as administrator and compatible mode if you´re not on XP, otherwise wont have conection.
- In the program go to: "Help" - "Test Hardware". In the bottom bar it should read Hardware present, if not you did something wrong.
- In eddevice button select your sst chip: eddevice-> Eprom eletrical erase-> sst27sfxxx-> sst27sf512
- In the top it should read PCB3 in blue if it says willem click and change.
- Put the dip switch accordingly to the image.

(!! move jumpers j9 and j10 to the right to select version 0.97ja otherwise wont be able to burn !!)

5.To erase chpips. Place chip in willem, put the safety jumper in the 2 pins. (j1 (?) for willem 5.0, right of the chip socket first 2 pins vertically)
click erase, and check if the chip is empty (follow video intructions) (to save the previous map follow point 8.)

6.Burnning
-Place your chip
-Load the 32kb file you got from Crome or wtv.
-In the dial boxes (Bottom right of the program) put exactly or will not work:
-Offset hex: "008000" (This is the adress for the second part of the chip, where the ecu will read)
-Check type: "32 bit CRC" (ECU wont read 16-bit)
-Printer port: LPT1 (0x378) (it should be the port you are using)
7- Program Chip!

8- To read chips. In bottom menu, second page you can see the lines to be burned or read from the chip. Clear the buffer and read chip, save it. Then you will have a 64k file (Chips has 2 halfs 32k+32k=64k), open in notebook and delete the first empty half, reads "yyyy". you should get a 32.00kb file you can now open in Crome.
