It sounds like the switch inside the latch assembly as well as the limit switch(es) inside the motor are not working.

When the hatch is opened, the hatch will leave the latch assembly and open a plastic switch inside this assembly. This will tell the motor to go to the upper limit. When the hatch is closed, it will close this switch, telling the motor to go to the lower limit.

If the motor never stops when you close the hatch, I would guess that the switch(es) inside the motor are not working to tell the motor to stop when it reaches the lower limit.

It sounds like you have three problems.

1. The motor will not operate when you release the hatch (plastic switch in the latch assembly?).

2. The motor will not stop when you close the latch (switch(es) inside the motor to tell the motor to stop when it reaches it limit?).

3. You need to tighten the motor/latch assembly.

Make sure all the connectors are good. Wiggle the wiring to see if anything changes.

Unless you can fix the internal limit switches in the motor, you may need another. The plastic switch in the latch may also need to be replaced.

Just my guess.

EDIT: If you want to keep the motor off with the hatch closed during this problem, just remove the fuse.

If memory serves, there is a cable coming out of the motor that raises the assembly up and down. If the motor operates continuously, then it would appear that something is stripped inside the motor (in addition to the limit switch(es) problem described above).

this happens to me at times. all i do is take my finger and push on where the catch catches the motor, know what i mean? without taking anything apart just push down on the latch thing in the motor with your finger. this should bring it back up to the top of the motor so it will catch the hatch. hope this helps.

This happened to My 91' years ago... the whole motor for the thing fell apart. Some of it is made out of plexi-glass, it seems (good idea, GM) I just unhooked the motor,(so it wouldn't constantly run anymore) drilled a hole in the "track" part. (where it slides up and down) through the part that slides and the part it slides ON and put a big screw through them. Now it just shuts like any trunk would....like they should've done it in the first place. I don't need a motor to pull down a hatch that I can easily close, Myself! Also, I made the hole I drilled a little bigger on the top piece, so I could make adjustments if it didn't close tightly on the first try (which it didn't) Now it closes tighter than it ever did new.
