Anyone have any experience with the Accell Super Coil?
I'm upgrading my ignition system from the battery up in a little while and I would like to hear a few comments on the Accell Super Coil vs. the Race Coil. Anyone running either one feel free to sing their praises or complain, I will read them all. Thanks in advance.

You haven't noticed any changes at all? I would think there would be some difference. Anyway, thanks.

worthless..
it's capability is only for higher voltages which has nothing to do with sparks total energy.
get an MSD instead. The total energy of the spark goes way up. Still it is hard to get a performance gain with ignition alone unless your tuning is running you into missfires.

I didn't really expect a lot of performance from upgrading just the ignition, it's just the next step in my "master plan". I was just wondering about the coil, because I can get one for like $20 since I work at AutoZone(go ahead and laugh, I'm used to it!)but we don't carry MSD. Therefore, no discount. I was thinking that Accel might be good enough ...for now. Thanks.

I've got the super coil, but I don't think there's really that much difference. I only bought it 'cause the parts store was out of the stock ones. But the wires are good!!

My uncle and I used to run a dyno in his shop for his race car team and i asked him about this very thing and this is what we came up with. A coil has to fire faster with the more RPMs an engine is running, so the higher the RPMs the less time a coil has to recharge. Now the stock GM HEI coil (and the offset coil for that matter, both were tested) starts lossing voltage rapidly above 4500 RPMs. The advantage of a super coil, is the voltage drop off isn't as bad (if any) with a higher output. Accel Coils keep a constant voltage of about 55,000 volts or 55KV all the way up to 7000 RPMs. The stock coil puts out about 25KV above 4500 and 20KV at 7000. For us, a simple question turned into a weekend science project and i'm glad we did. I say get the coil. You may not feel a difference, but it's there. My old 2.8 Camaro with an Accel Super coil made about 5 more HP at peek and an average of 8hp threw the whole band, plus a cleaner HP curve threw the upper RPM range. This was about 5 years ago that we did this and i will always have a better coil on my cars for it. My 2 cents worth.

Thanks CHVYWOLF, that was what I was wanting to hear. Someone with personal experience and a little technical knowledge. I think I've made my mind up. What do you think; new distibutor with vacuum and mechanical advance, new coil mounted away from the dist., new wires, HEI advance curve kit, new cap and rotor, and new wires connecting everything( battery to starter, starter to coil, etc). I appreciate everyone's advice. Thanks.

I think it's mostly what you want to do. Personaly I threw out my TBI and put on a Holley and switched from the computer distibuter to an HEI dist from an 86 TA and an Accel coil with cap, rotor and 8.8 spiral core wires with no problems in the last 8 months (except the ones i brought on myself. Can't leave well enough alone hehehe. Then again, if i did, i wouldn't be on this board huh) Anyways, if i were you i would do some checking on what you need, price, call some manufacturers etc.. thats what i did. Oh yeah, and asked for some help on this board. I guess it just boils down to go with what you know and what you like. It sounds like a good set up to me. Laters

I had an Accel Super Coil before going to my MSD 6AL & MSD Coil combo. I noticed the car had a bit more power at higher rpm's than with stock. Also, my auto trans shifted higher at WOT with the Super Coil on, and I assume that's due to the trans feeling some extra HP at the top end. I put this towards exactly what ChvyWolf said. The higher voltage "overall" of the Accel (or any aftermarket) coil gives you more spark with less coil saturation (high rpm) than the stocker.

I have a question about installing my heated o2 sensor. it needs to be tied into the ignition power and ground wires. so i was looking at my super coil and it has negative and positive terminals. i tried reading the wires with the ingition off, and got negative voltage readings. with the key turned to the on position i got a reading of .6 to .7 volts. this seemed really low to me i thought it would be 12 to 14 volts? so anyway i started the car and read the wires still a low voltage is this enough volts to run the 02 sensor. any other sugesstions
Accel coil
I have used 2 coils so far. First one was the 140008 rated at 42,000 volts. It helped alot then I decided to upgrade to the 140009 coil--48,000 volts and c/d compatible. I was able to gap my plugs from .035 to .050 and it did feel stronger. My son has the old coil on his car and he has noticed a difference.
