Custom Chips
I have read that when you remove the smog pump the computer can think that it is using EGR but it isn't. Can a custom chip "tell" my computer that I don't have any smog stuff?
About how much do custom chips cost?

The ECM has no input from the air pump. The air pump output goes through two valves, which are computer controlled. If the valves are disconnected from the harness, the ECM will set a code, because it thinks the valve coils have opened. The air valve error codes may be disabled in the PROM. The air pump has nothing to do with the EGR valve. The EGR valve is vacuum controlled, and the vacuum is controlled by a solenoid, which is computer controlled. If the EGR solenoid is removed from the harness, the computer will set a code, for the same reason listed above. The EGR diagnostic may also be disabled in the PROM. I've seen custom chips range anywhere from $100 to $600, depending on the vendor. You have some options, if you want to retain your stock chip, though, & not get any codes set. You could leave the harness plugs connected to the three solenoid valves, or you could disconnect any of the three solenoid valves from the harness & put a 1K ohm 1/4 watt resistor (from Radio Shack) in place of the solenoid. This will make the computer think that the solenoid is still there & it will not set a code.

Thank you for the advice! Are you saying that the AIR pump is not used in the EGR system? For instance could i remove my smog pump and keep EGR?
Where can I go on the internet to get quotes on custom chips?

Yes, the air injection system and the EGR system are separate independant systems, and one may be removed without removing the other.
