Just got Accel 300+

I just ordered the Accel 300+ ignition. I have a remote coil. The guy at Summit said I can remove the ignition module in the distributor because the Accel system bypassses it. But in the directions it has directions for leaving it in and taking it out.

Can i take it out? Any ideas?

No you can't take it out, LOL thats module is also the magnatic pick up for our cars, with out that pice how is your ignition going to know when to fire. I haven't seen the Accel 300 but if it has a remote coil that doesn't look like the stock one you have some wiring ahead of you.

Umm... the ignition knows when to fire when it picks up the signal from the coil in the distributor. Guess you haven't been around aftermarket ignitions much huh... On a carburated HEI style distributor where the module is strictly used to fire the coil then YES you can bypass it and just use the ignition box. That's what I'm doing right now.

On a computer controlled distributor like the ones in TPI cars the module also controls ignition timing, something a box couldnt do. So it would be wise to leave it in there and just use the box to fire the coil.

LOL, Odyssey you make me laugh, mister thinks he is all knowing. I've been around them a long time as a matter of fact, wired a few up too. And know that on our distributors they have the cheapest pickup coil know to man, so if your planning on using the stock distributor for a bases for a hot ignition your wasting your time, go aftermarket for the distributor too while your at it.

Here's what I'm guessing based on what I've been told by Accel and from talking to you guys:

The module can be taken out on carb cars, but must remain intact on FI cars. In either case though, the Accel ignition setup overides it. Thats why I'm assuming there's two different wiring diagrams in the directions; one with it removed and one with it in.

Sound about right?

The bottom line is... on an FI car, TBI or TPI, the module HAS to stay. The only part you can bypass the actual amplifier/coil driver in the module. But the module itself needs to STAY to control timing advance and retard functions.

Riiight...

I'm running a STOCK coiled distributor in my 11 second ride. Yes.. it does have a "hot ignition". Using a Hyfire digital VI ignition. An aftermarket distributor is NOT an absolute necessity.
