starter problem,stuck at merchants tire
my 86 lg4 iroc has had a weird no crank problem for about a year.Well yesterday it died in the food lion parking lot.Until now I would just wiggle the wires at the starter and it would crank and be fine for awhile.Well I noticed that the small wire(cant see what one)going to the solonoid is loose.I tried tighting this by hand the best I could and got the car to crank but it turned real slow and wouldnt start.I wiggled it somemore, cranked it and smoke came from the starter area, then it had nothing.I didnt want to tow the car and had no way on working on it there so we pushed it 60 yards to a merchants tire.Knowing I was in for a reeming I told them to fix it.$240.00 for a starter(wow) then more testing could be done.Shouldnt a test of the starter tell them thats it?There was surely power to the stater from the key, whats left?I knew when it finally died It wouldnt be in the driveway. So how much too much is that price?I know I had a starter put on my wifes v-6 firebird a year ago and it was $60.00,I bought the starter myself($60.00pep-girls)) that time though.thanks
sounds like the little donut contact inside the solonoid is toast. You can buy just a solonoid at most car places, or you can buy a completely reman. starter with a lifetime guarantee for under $80. I think you can get a brand-new Delco for under $130, so if there price doesn't include labor they are raping you hardcore
Hope that helps you some,
Matt
