oil pressure guage

hey guys, i hope you can give me some advice.
uumm, ok, my oil pressure guage on my 89 formula goes crazy sometimes. when its normal, it points straight up at 30 (dont konw what those #'s are). but then some times the guage sticks up around 60 and wiggles around alot, if i let off the gas, it will go back down but not all the way. it doesnt do this every single time, and sometimes it will do it and then i shut er down and when i cruise again it doesnt do it. i dont konw if i really have a pressure problem, or a retarded guage. if its a pressure problem, is it a cause for concern
thanks for any help

You could try a new oil sending unit; my 89 IROC 350 was doing something similar to this...the pressure would sometimes just drop to zero for no apparent reason. I thought my oil pump was going out and would take the engine with it, but it turned out to be the sending unit - they can get flaky sometimes. I didn't notice what size engine you have, but on mine it's just above the oil pan on the driver's side and I can reach right up to it with no problem. Grab it with a vise grips or an appropriate open-end wrench and swap it out in less than 5 minutes. I don't /think/ those sending units are too expensive.
