URGENT! Need help-gauges dont work-finding short in wireing?!?!

1989 Firebird Formula, carb'd 350/700R4
none of the gauges work (Fuel level MIGHT Work...not sure...though, havnt driven to see for sure...)....the gauge panel works cause it worked in my friends car.....put a new fuse in for the gauges, started the car up, the tach needle bounced a little very quickly, the others may have moved too, but i didnt see....but they immediatly went dead just like before...fuse blew also....
how can i find the short?
Also, i'm gonna try and put an autometer tach in, and by looking at the wireing diagram in the haynes manual i need to hook it up to a white wire and a black wire w/ white stripe......found a black wire w/ white stripe that was hooked up to a connector that wasnt attached to anything in back of the gauges, but no white wire was near it.....how do i hook it up? Thanks,
-Chris
