Bad Starter?

Alright. So i went to start my car the other morning, and there's absolutly nothing when i turn the key, except for all my guages/radio coming on, and a clicking under the hood(i'm guessing the starter solinoid). I've got an 86 camaro, auto tranny. I tried troubleshooting, by hooking the starter solinoid directly up to the battery. When i did that, the starter spun, but didn't engage in the flywheel. I guess i'm just wondering if i need a new starter, a solinoid, or both. And if so, how much is each one going to cost me. I guess i'm just trying to figure out what the problem is still.

Thanks for the help.

Later~

PS...sorry, just figured out that this should probably be under "general tech." Feel free to move it if you'd like to.

It sounds like the solenoid drive is not kicking out like it should. A remanufactured starter at Advance auto will run from about $35.00 and your old one to about $90.00. Not sure what your part number will be but the part number for my 89 IrocZ 5.7L was P3570MS and it was $35.00 + the $15.00 core charge. The solenoid is about $15.00 I believe and the GP sorenson part number is S124Z if I remember correctly.
