i was wanting to know if any of you have ever heard or have experienced this problem. A couple days ago, my car was running normal. then all of a sudden the cars idle use to be around 450 in gear, now its just under a grand, when its in park its right at a grand and it use to be around 800, when i have it in drive then i go to park it idles up to like 1500 then goes back down to 1000. i have also noticed that my gas mileage is starting to show this problem as well. at half a tank i use to have about 200 to 220 miles already, now im like close to 150 miles. a buddy on mine, his dad said that it sounds like one of my sensors could be going bad, no check engine light either yet. any suggestions

Go ahead and test the TPS voltage through its range. If the output voltage isn't linear, or has dead spots along the range of operation, you might want to replace it. If it tests good, just check/set the idle position voltage and forget about it.

If that doesn't help, I'd suggest:

1. Cleaning the throttle body;
2. Lightly lubricating the pivot points for the throttle shaft;
3. Cleaning the IAC air passages;
4. And removal, disassembly, and cleaning/lubrication of the IAC stepper motor.

 

can you test that with a dvom, i thought you could only test it with a scope, and do you also know if autozone or advance can test a tps

 

A digital meter will do just fine.
