Check the sticky at the top of the Cooling section. If that doesn't answer all your questions, a will always provide a fountain of information.

The sticky and most all of the searches will result in a way to hook up a fan so that it still comes on normally, but also allows you to turn it on when you want to.

What I believe 86V8Z28Camaro is seeking is to disable the coolant fan relay and just run a switch so he can leave the fan off until he wants to turn it on, so that the fan does not come on before the car is warmer than he wants.

86V8Z28Camaro: I would be very cautious about doing this. What if you forget to turn the switch back on and your car overheats causing serious damage?

The normal switch setup you will find in these threads leaves control of the fan to the relay. The switch is being added so you can turn on the fan at your whim. This is done by grounding the relay coil ground wire (dark green on my car) of the relay and 'completing a circuit'. When adding a switch in this circuit you strip back a little of the insulation and attach a wire to relay coil ground.

What you want to do is 'break the circuit'. You should be able to break the circuit by putting a switch in-line of the 12v line (black w/ red stripe on my car) being carried from the relay to the fan. When adding a switch in this circuit you will need to cut the 12v line (black w/ red stripe on my car) that goes from the relay to the fan and the switch needs to be placed in-line of those two wires. The switch will need to be able to handle the amps coming out of the relay, I am unsure what that may be.

This will allow the fan to operate normally when the switch is "On" and will allow you to disable the fan when the switch if "Off".

With all of that stated, it may be possible to just put a higher temp sensor in so that it doesn't kick on at a lower temp. That would be a less invasive way to resolve your issue, but you asked a question and I figure I would take a moment to reply to that question.

I hope of have been of some assistance.

Rick

Warm-up speed is controlled
by the mechanical thermostat staying
closed till a pre-determined temperature.
The fan being on while the thermostat is closed
will have no effect.

i would recommend a relay if your going to splice that main power wire on the fan and run a switch inside the car... because i did this in my old car and that switch+wiring would get soooo hot it melted the electrical tape/plastic around it...just becareful, dont need an electrical fire man.... and post up any answers u come across, im sure ppl would love to save some time searching...and i know this has been discussed about 5060348230 times on the boards....

Why would you put a switch inline with the fan motor? You'll burn the switch out or worse. If you're going to be splicing any wires anyhow, splice the fan control relay signal wire that goes into the relay then on to the fan switch, anywhere in series either on the wire running into or out of (to fan switch) will do. This would be a much safer method.

(By into or out of the relay, I mean either the signal or ground wire that operates the coil in the relay)
