Yes you can do that. Most of the time when you buy new motors anyways, they come w/ nuts and bolts to attach them.

You have to drill the old rivets out.The door panel is easy to get off also.Just take your time doin as to not rip and clips off the cardboard around the outside of panel.

The upper portion, black plastic that runs the length of the door, can be a pain the first time. Roll the window down, push in and up on it at the rear of the door to pop the first fastener, then work your way toward the front of the door. Total of four fasteners, IIRC. Also, some of the torx head bolts on the plastic of the door handle/mirror area are fake. Use a magnet of you'll round them out (don't ask me how I know). Consider the following link:

Apparently you didn't remove the panel correctly. Once the door panel is removed, you'll see that the plastic piece is secured to the panel, which is very heavy cardboard of some sort. Once the "nuts" are removed, the plastic comes off easily.

Remove arm rest and the plastic panel which includes the locks, mirror adjustment, etc. Pop the Christmas tree fasteners round the door's perimeter. Do as suggested above. Buy a manual.
