Hatch motor problems
Hatch motor problems
Okay i have an 89 camaro rs v6. When i bought it a couple weeks ago i noticed that the hatch motor plastic housing was broken and the plastic gears were grinded down. So i went and bought another gear and the housing. I went to install it today and got it all hooked up. When i connected power to it the motor started turning the unit upwards. It kept going upwards until the dang thing hit the metal lips on the inside of the trunk and then proceeded to break the plastic motor housing. I am not very familar with the motor unit - Is it supposed to keep going up like that?
Im thinking of just welding the whole unit down - i read that some one had done that on this forum.

Re: Hatch motor problems
I cut the wires, then drilled and bolted mine, worked fine for a couple years until I got rid of the car.

Thanks for the quick reply Atilla,
Yea i wanted to do something like that 'cause right now i just need the dang thing to pass inspections. Where did you drill the hole in it?
ALSO - i am wondering if maybe you have to RESET the switching unit when you plug everything up again? anyone have any experience with this stuff that can please explain why the thing decided to break itself?
- yea i was looking at Hawks 3rd gen parts and i guess i didnt hook the switching unit up right. Its got two tabs on it that are supposed to trigger the unit to move up and down.... damnit... oh well guess ill just order another plastic housing and try a second time.

Re: Hatch motor problems
either drill and bolt or replace again, then break that, then drill and bolt. Sorry, no pics of where I drilled, but it's no challenge to figure out.

Re: Hatch motor problems
Your reversing switch must be bad or the pull-down unit (specifically the lift rod) was assembled incorrectly when you put it back together. Did you make sure the two tabs that stick out of the lift rod were facing the motor? It is possible to assemble it wrong, in that case the tab wouldn't trip the reversing switch to turn off the motor.

Got the new reinforced housing in yesterday from TDS, and yes - i did put the switching unit on wrong... somehow lol. it didnt trip the switch which led to the motor pulling itself up until it broke the housing. Hatch is working great now - and i can finally pass inspection
