Re: electronic speedo to cable speedo?
I don't know Firebirds that well but you could either try swapping the speedometer unit from the cluster (if they are similar) into the new one, or get a hold of the transmission sender and wiring from the donor car (as mentioned above), or from one of the similar year.
I'm thinking that your original cable driven speedometer won't be affected by the electronics, plus your mileage on the odo will be correct. One thing that you might notice with the new cluster is that some of the engine warning lights etc. may not match. They may either light up incorrectly or not at all, and IIRC the the manual clusters have an up-shift indicator.

Re: electronic speedo to cable speedo?
bringing this dead thread back to life, i hope. I have a 1987 GTA with the digital dash and it works 100% I just have a few questions.
I am upgrading to the 4L60E transmission using a stand alone computer for tranny and my transmission guy has done it on 3rd gens b4 but he isn't sure about the digital dash for getting the speedo to work on my application due to digital dash and him being 2 states away.
He spoke to a person at http://www.abbott-tach.com/Welcome.html
and they have a solution but he isn't sure if its cable driven or digital due to this "rare" dash. They have a adapter that suppose to plug in behind the cluster and plug in to the transmission or something of that nature.
Can you guys tell me some more info about how this speedo system works in my car so i can order the right part.
Thanks
Mitch

Re: electronic speedo to cable speedo?
You should be able to look at your car to verify that you have electronic wiring and not a mechanical cable at the transmission. On one the sensor is at the transmission and the other the sensor is at the cluster.
Your builder should also be able to tell you if you can re-use your original sensor from the 700r4 in the 4L60E. And IMO it would be best if you can use your original sensor for your cluster.
Edit: Here's a mechanical cable:

And this electronic:

Re: electronic speedo to cable speedo?
Well I'll find out tomorrow when I'm ripping out the puny 350 and 700r4 and I'll take a look at it.
I wonder if the old sensor would work, I know the two transmissions pretty much look the same minus internals. I won't know until the transmission gets here and I plug and play with it.
Thanks for your advice.

You're welcome. I'm not sure about the sensor either, I agree that they are very similar which is why I was thinking about it. Make sure to ask your builder if it would work or not.
