electric fan controller install.

I have an 84 camaro that has seen a ton of upgrades, the latest of which is an electric fan. So I bought an adjustable fan controller from Derale performance and am ready to install it, the problem is that the instructions call for me to connect the yellow wire to a positive(+) switched ignition source. If the fuse panel is the only option, which spot in the fuse panel would I use? Here's a pic I found of the fuse panel in my berlinetta..is there a place in the fuse box I can use?? Here is a detailed description of the fuses...can I use the Fuel pump spot in row 1? If not is there a place here that is on with the ignition only...?

Starting at the upper left, moving right.

Row 1
10A - ECM/IGN
10A - Fuel Pump
15A - Crank
20A - C/H

Row 2
20A - Turn signals and Back-up
10A - TBI INJ1 (Fuel Injectors)
20A - Tail Lights
25A - Heater / Air Conditioner

Row 3
10A - Gauges
10A - TBI INJ1 (Fuel Injectors)
20A - Courtesy Lights
35A - Power Windows

Row 4
Ignition Power Connector
5A - INST LPS
10A - Radio
Always-On Power Connector
35A - Power Accessories

Row 5
Ignition Power Connector
Door Light Switch Connector (For car alarms)
25A - Wipers
Radio Power Connector
Always-On Power Connector
20A - Stop / Hazards

Re: electric fan controller install.

If you can't decide, you could check your fuse box with a Volt Meter
Set to 12v you could find which place to hook it up with the key on
A tip is to install it on the Power side of the fuse so you don't affect the circuit that fuse is protecting. That is if your New circuit has it's own fuse

Can you please explain what you mean by" install it on the Power side of the fuse"
Wouldn't the fuel pump fuse slot be a good place to start seeing as the fuel pump would only be on when the ignition is on or car is running? In the diagram I see only one "hot in run" wire and it apparently hooks up to several gauges and even the cruise control. Anyone have any ideas? I have included the same diagram as above but I marked an arrow indicating the "hot in run" wire. This means the wire is hot while the car is running only. Getting closer to figuring this one out.

Hot Spot

Your diagram is not all inclusive in reference to Hot In Run locations.

Anyway don’t use any fuse in the block as
Gregzz4 is indirectly mentioning.

Install an additional fuse for the fan controller.

You can splice into the
Hot In Run line coming out of the ignition switch.

Re: Hot Spot

Thanks for your help man, you say to Install an additional fuse for the fan controller....where do I install the fuse?between the controller and where I tap into the hot in run wire?(at the ignition) oh yeah and what color will this wire be?
thanks in advance.

Re: Hot Spot

Yes, put a new fuse between the controller and the fuse box, or wherever you get your power from
As for my comment about Power side of the fuse...
Pull the fuse out and then find out which side of the block is hot
What you are doing is getting power for your new circuit without running it off of the fuse in the block that is meant for something else. That way both circuits still have their own fuses

Re: Hot Spot

Thanks for the help Gregzz4! What size fuse would I use between the controller and fuse box? I thought that NINA said not to use anything from the fuse box, but to use the hot in run from the ignition.....I am so confused.

Gregzz4’s information is correct.

We’re both saying you need to add a fuse.

It’s not important to be near the fuse block when doing it.

You can splice into the
Hot In Run line coming out of the ignition switch, the pink wire.

If the fan controller directly feeds the fan use a 30 amp fuse.

Re: Hot Spot

Thanks for clarifying for me NINÅ, I get what your saying and understand that I am going to need to put a 30amp fuse between the controller and hot in run wire. I will probably put the fuse near the fan controller because it is mounted in an area wher I have easy acces for changing the fuse if ever needed. One other thing I was wondering about is I have an edelbrock electric choke and it too needs a " hot in run wire" can I put both the fan controller and the electric choke on the same "Hot in run" source?
Thanks alot and for being patient. I am learning everyday and appreciate the help. thank you.

The fuse should be mounted closest to the source of power, not just where it’s most convenient.

An electric choke draws about an amp so you can put it on the same
Hot In Run source and install a separate 2 amp fuse for it.

The dual fan setup needs 60 amps worth of fusing so now your talking about an in-engine compartment setup.

What is the model number of the controller?

I have to get to my garage to find the directions, I should have the model number in an hour or so. Oh yeah and the electric fan I am using is not a dual, rather a single fan. The fan and shroud came from a donor car, a 86 trans am. I will let you know what model number asap, thanks again NINÅ
