Car won't hold charge

Im about to buy a 305 TPI camaro that has had the battery replaced, alternator, and starter. However it won't hold a charge and drain battery. He claims hes looked and found nothing draining it such as a light or radio. Im sure it would be a wire to or from the alternator, but has anyone herd or had simular issue and turned out to be different or have any other ideas? Thank You.

Once I had a horn relay that was stuck and the PO had disconnected the horns.

Make sure map lights aren't being left on (if you have them) and listen to hear if the fuel pump keeps running after the car is off. That killed my brand new battery. Was an oil pressure switch that needed to be replaced then it was fine.

Re: Car won't hold charge

Well I guess when the car is off its fine but drains te battery when it's running. He says he's had the new alternator tested three times and they say it works and claims he has new battery as well. Also says he put new starter on it. Any ideas?

Then you need to verify the condition of the alt.

With the engine cold and off use an external voltmeter across the battery.

You should see about 12 volts.

Now start the engine.

You should see about 14 volts using an external voltmeter.

Now, what were your findings?

Re: Car won't hold charge

Thanks for the video and advice about testing with voltmeter I never done it before and going to try tonight. I found something else out after I bought the car. Apparently he has bought a new alternator and had it tested however they added that when they tried to spin the pulley around freely when it was off it would catch. Also he just mumble instead of giving me a straight answer about where he tested it. I'm sure they have bought a faulty alternator. Will post my findings. Thanks everyone.

Re: Car won't hold charge

Well Today I found the drain. There are about a million wires they just cut and left and some under the hood were touching metal and sparking. I capped all wires and eleminated all the wires plugged into the fuse box that ran no where. Now my car charges better, but the battery will start to drain if the car is a low rpm but cruiseing its fine. Im going to have the battery switched out since it has warrenty and get a new ALT even its not needed or not. Thanks for the input guys.

I'd try and find out where those wires go, if you can. See if the guy you're buying it from but them and why. usually it's beause people are lazy and don't want to fix the problems they find.
