Alternator wiring

Kinda new to the third gen camaros so needing a little help and advice. Bought a 85 model that had originally a 2.8 with idiot lights. Have put a 350 1st gen engine in it. Went to gauges, all mechanical, and they are working. Going by wiring diagram the brown wire that used to go to light is hooked up to alt but no light. Alt seems to be charging as when the engine is running as it is running a straight 14 volts give or take. Problem is that when I hook the battery up, the alt has a high pitched whine, no matter what position key is in. Do I need to do something else with the brown wire as I think this is where all my problem is coming from. Unhook wire? put some kind of resistor in it and hook to a battery wire? What to do, what to do? thanks Jay

Refreshing Alternator Whine

One of two things happened.

You mis-wired the alt or it went bad coincidentally.

Make sure you no longer use terminal L on the alt.

The heavier
red wire goes to the positive stud, and should have power at all times.

The
thinner red wire goes to terminal S (the sensing circuit) and should have power at all times.

The
brown wire goes to terminal F (the turn-on input) and should have power when the key is in the RUN position.

Happy Racing!

Re: Refreshing Alternator Whine

Ok thanks, dont think that the alt is dead. It is charging. the concern was the whine when battery hooked up and engine not running. The brown wire is not hooked to anything. Just dead ends in the dash. Will try and hook to a keyed wire and see if that fixes thanks.

You don't state what type ( SI or CS ) alt you used with your 350 swap
If CS then read this

Is not straight 12V ; has to have a resistor or the idiot light bulb in the circuit for it to work correctly

Mine seems to be different then, then thinner(still thickish) red wire is in the 1st pin position(on the left looking from the back of the alt), and the thin brown wire is in #2 pin position(right).
And in all the diagrams I've found the Filed wire is the one on the left and the sensing wire is the one on the right, so...WTF has happened to my car?
