1989 trans am antenna motor clicking

This should be a good one for all 3rd gen techs out there. This 89 trans am (5.0l TPI, Auto) has a working oem antenna motor w/ all wires (green-white-gray) properly hooked up & no previous alterations. The antenna motor clicks about every 60 seconds and heats up but works perfect. It gets worse: This is happening with the keys out of the car!!!
I have since pulled the fuse obviously as I trouble tree this thing. Im open for any suggestions!! Thanks in advance fellas.

Re: 1989 trans am antenna motor clicking

It could be something to do with the motor switch. I actually just bought an oem switch off ebay a while back. Im pretty sure this is one of the parts that goes into them when they get refurbished. Maybe its sticking or something. I havent ever looked closely at one.

Do you have any more info/link/part no. for that switch? I was hoping maybe it was just the relay to the antenna-which I ordered anyway. Thanks man

Re: 1989 trans am antenna motor clicking

Here you go,

Id go around with a test light and see where you have power and when. Also listen to where the noise is exactly coming from. The antenna should only turn on and come up when the radio, not cd, but tuner, am/fm is switched on. Do you have an aftermarket radio? If I remember correctly there is a power lead from the antenna that hooks to the back of the radio along with plugging the antenna cord in.

I bought this switch a while back and I'm not sure if you can get them anymore. I'm sure someone makes them. Careful if you take it apart as there is a glass tube that is part of the switch that could break. Also, just looking at my nos part, the brass contacts are corroded so check yours out. Some scotch bright will do the trick.

Hope this helps.

My man all I can say is this is EXACTLY the type of response/information I was looking for. Thanks a ton !!! And to answer your question it is currently the factory head unit (never taken out yet) and I'm looking to replace it with after market.

I'm thinking the switch inside the motor as well. Ive been combing the net based on the numbers on the delco box (in your picture) & cant find anything-even close!

Re: 1989 trans am antenna motor clicking

You keeping the radio?

When I came across the switch I swooped it up right away. I'm sure there are people/parts out there. I see refurbished antennas on ebay all the time. Spendy tho. 250-280 with core. So if they want a core there must be parts. Maybe contact one of the guys selling them on ebay and see if they can guide you. I've never had the pleasure of working on one yet.

Glad I was of some help. If you need better pics I can get some. I see some are a tad blurry.

Re: 1989 trans am antenna motor clicking

I always keep the radios, I have a few. You need one? Thats a good idea, I'll get ahold of one the guys rebuilding them- hopefully theyre as cooperative as youve been. I assume the 2 numbers on the top of your box are good. What is the number (GR # 9 647 ) between the 9 & 6? Do I have that correct?

It is a tad warn, but I'm 99% sure its 9-647.

In my GM Dealer book, they use the 22038191.

I snapped a pic that will have every part number and description for our antenna's from my book for you.

Re: 1989 trans am antenna motor clicking

Here...

This will have every antenna part from 82-92

Your antenna part number is at top.

I highly recommend finding one of these and getting it. Make sure it has BOTH part numbers AND ILLUSTRATIONS. Lots of them are only part numbers.

Re: 1989 trans am antenna motor clicking

You can probably fix it if you open it up. I was able to repair my OEM antenna with a new nylon pusher and some cleaning/regreasing. The contacts probably need cleaned, etc.

Re: 1989 trans am antenna motor clicking

OR you can just buy a brand new OEM antenna. Yes they still make them. For some reason the manufacturer seems to have forgotten these were used in F bodys. They sell them for Jeeps. This is a 100% identical to OEM unit:

Amazon Amazon

Here's a good price on eBay too:

Thats a excellent point GeneralDisorder. I consider that option strongly but the seller insisted they were for Jeeps only. He wasnt even interested in the sale.

I looked into it and there are threads here and elsewhere that prove it's the same. And I can tell you from personally rebuilding mine (before I found out about this option) that by appearance alone it's identical. Here's one thread as evidence. Just Google the part number and "F body" for more:

Re: 1989 trans am antenna motor clicking

According to my book, there are several different antennas GM used from 82-92. Not saying the one on ebay wont work, cause it looks darn close, poss use it for parts, but its def not the same according to my book.

Re: 1989 trans am antenna motor clicking

I bought 2 of the Crown units last year. Only difference is the finial is a tad bigger and the harness on it is a tad shorter. Same antenna. Buy it or fix your old with the steel cable mod. I have all kinds of spares now.
