VATS Help with ECM Delete
After Swapping a Carbed 350 chevy into my '91 camaro Z28 5 speed I've decided I want to pull out the computer and all the useless wires it has in it because it's just unnecessary anymore. The problem i think I'm going to run into is with the Anti-Theft. Without the computer being there will it not read the resistance on the key and prevent the car from starting? Could I just swap in an ACDelco ignition switch? Or will that not work?

Re: VATS Help with ECM Delete
You just have to ground the starter enable relay that would normally be grounded through the VATS. Then you don't have to worry about the pellet in the key

Re: VATS Help with ECM Delete
You could activate the relay bye grounding the black/yellow wire.

Re: VATS Help with ECM Delete
I pulled TPI off and installed the Holley Terminator TBI without any problem. VATS would supply a ground to the Start Enable relay and a fuel enable signal to the ECM to enable the fuel injectors so unless you remove power to the VATS module it will still work to ground the starter enable relay. However, I took all of that out when I cleaned up my harness so I put an eyelet on the relay ground and ran a self-tapping screw through it into the pillar.

To the OP...
The only reason the start relay exists is to allow the PASSkey module to interrupt the starter motor if the key doesn't pass security test. PASSkey module communicates with the engine ECM to make that decision. (The PASSkey module is located behind the dash in the middle of the car and you have to take out pretty much the entire dash to get to it.) If you want to remove the engine ECM then you need to completely bypass the PASSkey module as well.
All the solutions you see are centered around the start relay. You can keep the start relay in tact and allow the key switch to operate the relay (and subsequently control the starter). Or you can bypass the relay entirely and hard wire the key switch directly to the starter. Tuned Performance suggested a method that bypasses relay entirely. Scooter suggested a method that keeps relay in tact. Personally, I kept the relay in tact just in case I want to use it in the future.
There is no right or wrong answer here. Normally relays exist to handle high current circuits, but in this case the relay isn't for that purpose. The key switch is already wired for the high current circuit and the relay exists only to allow the PASSkey module to interrupt the circuit. Here is link to a diagram I made when trying to decide what to do for myself. I had the entire dash out of the car at the time so I modified wiring at the PASSkey model itself, but that won't be practical for most people.
