Installing keyless ignition, need to bypass VATS, so confused!!!
Hey all,
I'm planning to install a keyless ignition button to my 89 Formula TBI, but I'm going crazy trying to figure out what the best and most reliable way to bypass VATS is!
I've searched and searched, and I can't really find a definitive answer. Some say to add a simple resistor to the wiring, some say to just splice two wires together, I've found countless "VATS bypass modules" online for $20-100....
So is there a product that actually works? I've seen this
https://www.summitracing.com/parts/prf-64023/
and
http://www.bakerelectronix.com/products_vats/
So whats the final answer here?
FYI I'll be installing this (I currently have an Avital Alarm): http://digitalguarddawg.com/product/pbs-x/

Use a bypass resistor to trick the module into believing the correct key is in the ignition.
Have a chip burned to disable the need for VATS at the ECM.
Remove the VATS module, wire in an aftermarket VATS signal generator.
Choose any one of the above options.

Or you could leave the VATS and just remove the relay ground and wire that to your alarm system. I essentially have that onie, but another brand, and I have it doing the ground for the starter relay for the security feature
**edit** oops. you have the push button start. You need to remove the VATS from the ECM, or trick the VATS like Drew said. the resistor mod is the cheapest, but may give you problems down the line and may take a while to chase it, if it happens

Push button start without the presence of an rf transponder or NFC device is a bad idea. Arguably even an rf transponder or NFC device is adding potential issues. The VATS system is a good theft deterrent, GM has documented that it dramatically reduced vehicle thefts. Even a regular run of the mill key without a resistor in it is better than a naked push button start, alarm or not.
