Well, I received my box from AFR a few days ago, but I haven't taken the time to open the package. Now the fun starts. 383 in the works.

the 1040's will work, but wont optimize your setup, but mine isnt optimized either.....
they come with springs for hyd. roller, but AFR can switch them out for solid roller if you like.
maybe some 210's or 220's?
later.

Re: AFR Eliminator #1040's!
Im concerned about going with too large of runners because this will be a street car and i want to maintain some steet manners. as for the solid lifters i mean real old school without the rollers

Re: AFR Eliminator #1040's!
Regarding large cc's on heads. I am now running a set of AFR 210's that have been worked over by Joe Sherman and then by Dr J to best fit my combination. They are now at 222cc and after driving the car today it has not lost one bit of its street manners. Idles very nicely and will break the tires loose in a heartbeat with plenty of low end grunt. This is a 369" motor. The throttle response is razor sharp. You give it some gas and "something happens". No sluggishness.
My thoughts on heads has certainly changed in the last few months. With a 406 motor I would not hesitate to go with the 220 heads. You will not be sorry.

-------------------------------
Depends if its a solid flat tappet or solid roller.
If you want street manners go with a mild cam (for the cubic inches) or a properly made cam..
I run a 250deg ish @.050 dur with a lift of just under .700 ish lift on a 110 lobe sep and a auto trans. built, stuffed it n my car (without a tune) and drove 6 hrs 2 Dayton OH and got 20ish mpg with a 3.73 gear.
To big of head argument is for the old days of running stumble-rators and poor performing heads.
Fuel injection has helped a lot. I'm a fan of atleast 210cc intake runners on a 350.. And as with any head change, it will perform as long as you have the rest of the parts to make it work properly. If you plan on future mods, y buy a set of heads now and then have to change them later??

Re: AFR Eliminator #1040's!
Yes, they have been reworked pretty good from the original AFR 210 heads. However the throttle response has not suffered one bit compared to my AFR 195 Competition heads that were on the car. The car really scoots when you give it some gas and is really fun to drive. I can not give it full throttle below say 40mph without the rear tires just breaking loose. I just went wide open throttle today for the first time.

Re: AFR Eliminator #1040's!
Personally, I'd go hydraulic roller in that 406. The old farts with the solid flat tappet cams are stuck in the 60s, when muscle cars made as much power as a 2011 V6, and needed a rebuild every 20k.
Rick and I both sell for the same place, he will take care of you with whatever you decide.

Re: AFR Eliminator #1040's!
check afr's web site under dyno combos one of the most powerful combos for the naturally aspirated 400 sbc was 574 ponies and 534 torque with solid flat tappet thats a lot of power to me

Re: AFR Eliminator #1040's!
Mine is close to the 503hp 383, same cam, but I have more compression and more cubes. Probably around 510 hp.
I'm not into adjusting valves weekly, and flattening cam lobes because of bad oil.
Either way, the 1040s are a great head as you can see from those combos.

Very pleased with the process so far. Same day I paid my money I got a receipt from AFR with a shipping date to my house. Thanks again 88BlackZ-51 Top notch seller in my book.
Looks like prices are going up after the first of the year, if your on the fence you better pull the trigger.

With a 406 motor I would not hesitate to go with the 220 heads. You will not be sorry.
They would walk all over the Dart 230s I have now.
Anyone need a kidney?
Guy with the solid flat tappet, Talk to Tony or Jeremy
Depending on your cam youll probably want less spring pressure than what they come with. 120-140 tops on the seat would be my guess.
Use a quality roller rocker and you shouldnt have to adjust very often at all.
