Need help on deciding which engine to swap into my 92 Z28

I have a couple of questions for you guys... I am trying to decide on which type of engine that I want to swap into my Camaro.

Right now I have a stock 92 z-28 with a 305 5-speed.

This is what I want:

- engine swap
- fuel injected engine
- small block
- want to use the t-56 transmission
- want as much horse power as I can get for around $4000-5,000
- don't want to use nitrous, but would use a super charger.
- want to make power up to around 5500 rpm

Here is what I have considered:

- swap in a LT-1 system (either stock or aftermarket crate engine)
- swap in a LS-1 system (either stock or aftermarket crate engine)
- swap in a 350 TPI system
- swap in a GM crate engine, with aftermarket fuel injection system.

I have been doing a lot of reasearch and can't really make a decisive decision. I would like to get feedback from you guys and see what you think. If anyone knows of any great websites or other info that would help me out please let me know

id say LS1....VERY light...get them for about 2K off of ebay with low miles...then put a procharger and you will have a FAST car...theres your 5000 budget

Remember power to weight ratio....all aluminium engine with 430+hp...what else can you ask for?..you could easily run 10s and 11s

www.ls1.com

Thats my 2 cents..

Hey, I'm in College Station too. Your car is a good candidate for a motor swap being a v8 5spd car. I'd suggest the LT1/T56 swap, or the LS1/T56 swap if you can afford it. You'll love either one of those motors.

Whatever you do, set aside some money for the driveline.

You're going to need it. A strong engine that hooks will shred that little rear axle in a short time. Power won't help if you can't get it down.

A guy on our main drag who drove a vicious Mopar used a rule of thumb that every dollar you put in the motor meant you needed another one in the driveline.

LCA's, torque arm, trans, cluch, gears, posi, etc. It's not flashy, can be hard to set up and they don't advertise as much as the engine guys do in the mags, so they don't get covered by the stories as much or so it seems.

Best bet: Snag a complete LT1 powertrain and trans, clean it up, and stuff it in. Get it running, then get nutty with the blowers and nitrous.m Probably want to put the headers in while the motor's out, though.

LT1's don't need much to light up (headers, cam, ported heads, injectors TB ) which makes life a lot easier. Pretty much everything fits ... Chevy almost built one for the 25th Anniversary car.

About how much would a good low milage LT-1 system with computer and all wiring cost?

How much do you think I could get for my entire drive train?

- 88,000 miles
- 305 TPI
- T-5
- Stock Rear End

Beats me, but probably about half of a new, complete one.

I'd look in the back of the bazillion Camaro/Chevy mags, all of them have ads for take out / salvage drivetrains, like LT1s and LT4's. For some reason, $2000-$2500 for and engine, trans, computer and accessories seems about right. Figure the same to get it swapped in with clutch, axle, upgrades, etc.

A good running LB9 drivetrain, engine trans accessories and axle should be worth about $500 or so ... more if it had lower miles.

Haven't bought or sold either, so it's really just a guess.

At first I think LS1, the culmination of the SBC to-date. But I think the aftermarket is more tuned towards the LT1 with speed parts being much cheaper for the LT1 vs LS1. I wish instead of putting the L98 and then the ZZ4 in my 89 RS I would have went with a good LT1.
