ID my 'new' block

I purchased a 350 that came out of an '84 Suburban. There is a block number on the left rear that is 3970010, there is also a 36 at a 90 degree angle to this number. The MorTec, Inc website gave me this information about the block number. I'm pretty sure that it is the 350. Can anybody confirm?

Block #......Size....Year....Bolt #......Notes
3970010....302.....69........4............Z-28 Camaro
3970010....327.....69........2............Trucks and industrial
3970010....350...69-80.....2 or 4

What type of heads may have come with this type of earlier block? I haven't taken the valve cover off yet, so I'm not sure what head i have acquired.

How do I tell 2 bolt from 4 bolt?

Thanks.

Edit: The heads are 333882. This is from MorTec:
333882.....74-80...350/400......76cc chambers
Are these heads any good for a street car (aka a Camaro)?

Thanks again.

The 010 block is a good high nickle 4" bore block. They were used in many makes and models for many years. It can be a 2 bolt or a 4 bolt. Since it came from a truck it's probably 4 bolt 350.

Look on the pad in front of the passenger side head for suffix codes. They're stamped into the block. This will tell you what the engine is and originally came from.

882 heads are junk. They're thin walled and usually crack. Go look for some 992 or 993 heads.

Re: ID my 'new' block

I am putting the same setup in my iroc will headers and a 160 stat help to keep the heads from cracking. Ive been looking for headers but on a budget. Thanks

Welcome aboard thirdgen.org.

Have you already checked the heads for cracking? I doubt a 160 degree thermostat will "keep" them from cracking. There are about 57 different reasons not to use those heads, and not a single good reason to use them that I can think of (including "Because I already have them").

Re: ID my 'new' block

Don't get me wrong but all the small blocks i've ever seen with 010 casting are 4 bolts .

That just means you haven't seen them all . . .

Doesn't much matter, 4-bolt mains help a truck more than they benefit a performance car.

Re: ID my 'new' block

True you can do almost as much wth a 2bolt as you can a 4bolt .
