California engine swap

91 rs 305 5speed

Has anybody changed to a 350 that lives in California. Did you have any problems passing the smog check. Where did you get your motor?Crate engine? I heard you can take some parts off the 305 and put them on the 350. What parts? How long did it take to finish the swap and how much did it cost? thanks for the help.

I am running into the same problem. But CHP has a project car titled "MY GENERATION CAMARO". Although it is an 87', most of it still applies to us. In the March 2003 edition they put a 355 in and used most of the 305's emissions parts. Also under featured vehilces there is a 91' that they put a GMPP 350 H.O. using the 305's smog. I am still trying to find out if it will infact work for the 91', but if you have C.A.R.B or EO cert parts you should be good.

The 350 HO package (that they used to sell... I heard they arent doing it anymore but I never verified that) was for carbed applications only, 82-87. 91, you are pretty much screwed legally as far as that is concerned. If you really want the legal route, I think the Caprice and truck engines are 350 TBI's that would technically be legal, if you swapped whatever might be different and it was off a 91 or newer vehicle.

I would just build a mild 350, make sure its tuned right, tell them its a 305 if they ask, and go with that. They'd have to check the casting numbers on the block to see if its not a 305.

Car: 92 Camaro RS
Engine: 350 Crate Motor
Transmission: Tremec TKO
Axle/Gears: 10 Bolt 3.73
I bought this crate motor.

http://www.goautocenter.com/300hp_tpi_1987-89.htm

Ordered it with the tbi cam (which is a Crane Compucam 2030 HR)
I'm using a Turbo City Throttle Body and Adjustable Fuel Pressure Regulator, 350 Cop Car Injectors, Edelbrock Performer tbi intake, SLP 1-5/8" Headers, 3" cat and 3" Flowmaster Exhaust.
It's making 317 hp (flywheel) with a custom chip from Ed Wright and passes smog in CA as a 305 (with the stock air cleaner on for the visual inspection)

i just put a 350 in my 92 rs, im in a training right now so it took me and a friend about 2 weeks and coming in for a little bit everynight working on it, but we had a fully stocked shop to do it in, the motor ended up costing me about 900 just a rebuilt one, and then maybe 200 if im right in just random stuff, water pump, plugs, knock sensor, oil temp sensor or pressure i dont remember, theres a few things you might need to replace, but just about everything works for the 350, the only thing is is before i changed the prom it stumbled and fell constantly, i changed the prom and it runs real well now, oh yeah, if you have a friend working with you, make sure he doesnt put the fly wheel on backwards...

I don't know where you are in California, but if you are anywhere near Orange County (and maybe even if you aren't), get in touch with Dyno Don. He can explain your options.

Thanks for all the info. I am going to Good Guys Car show this weekend to check some stuff out maybe find a engine/parts. I suggest to anyone who is looking for any parts to attend, I have been there in the past and they have private sellers who bring anything they have so you never know what you'll find. (Mostly classic cars parts)

I had a 89 camaro RS with a 305TBI motor, the 305 busted the crank and I dropped a 90 corvette 350 short block in it, I used the factory 305 heads, and intake and it passed its smog test with ease.

A 305 to a 350 is a smog legal swap which does not require going to the referee. I did this swap on an 85 k5. As long as it was a factory option, you can just bolt the thing in. If it was not a factory option things get a little tricky. I wanted to put a 454 in my k5, not a factory option. I am allowed to either put a 454 in my 85k5 "if" it mathces the setup of the 1990 k5 ss(454 factory option). Or I can swap in any CA emissions legal engine from a light duty vehicle(blazer is a light duty vehicle also) of current or newer year. These swaps require approval and special stickers and crap from a referee.
Hope this help you guys.

This isnt even close to factual. Thats all I have to say about it.

If a 350 was a factory option than yes it is true. You simply need to match the factory smog equipment setup for a 350offered on that vehicle of the same year(or newer). Should be easy since I think the smog stuff was about the same. Is this factual, no. Ask your referee, he will tell you same, then it still wont be factual. This is exactly what the referee "told" me. I do not have it in writing so I guess I could be wrong. If I am wrong please tell me how. It could save me a lot of time and money.

Now you changed the story to the correct one. And that sort of swap doesnt pass the test at any station, unless the tech intentionally or unintentionally overlooks it. Any swap that changes the emissions compliance of the vehicle (read:engine swap to a 350) requires certification from the referee.

I thought so also. Referee didnt give me a sticker/certification though. Next time I got it smogged the tech told me "this wont pass smog its suppose to be a 305 not a 350, and theres no sticker on it for a engine swap." I told him it was legit and argued with him for a while. The next day he said he called the referee who said it didnt need a sticker/cert because it was a factory option.
