Engine swap #3, lets do eight
hey, at least it's not a neon.
Yeah, sucks downgrading from the 3800 to the 305, but the potential for further upgrading by at least 45 more cubes is a good trade off.
fsag:
95 3800 200hp 225 tq (would feel liek more if it started again)
87 305 Carb 170hp 250 tq
Everything ( or at least 90% of it ) for the swap was gotten for $450. $26 e-carb off of e-bay (still **** e-check in this part of OH . at least until 1 Jan) dash & engien harness, tranny, assorted connections, and most of the front pass brake line so I cain bend a new one.
I highly reccomend reading & re-reading the v6-v8 swap thread.
ANd nothing makes going from an 85 Mechanical ralley gauage to 88 VSS ralley gauge back to an 85 ralley guage than having the whole harness

Man, I sure hope you go back to bastardification of third gens soon! I'm sitting here in the Afghan wilderness looking at all the awesome things that you did, and now this?!
If you have to, start drinking heavily before you go back to 305. It will make the rest of us that looked up to you as a hero feel better about your motivations......
No seriously, though, thanks for all of the buick v-6 swap info. I've done the rwd v-6 block swap stuff, but never the fwd. I think I'm gonna do it with my newest car, the 88 v-6/t5 project.
I won't be able to start until february or so till I get back to Indiana. Maybe you'll have stumbled on a non-sbc idea by then!
I will hold out the hope..........

yeah, it suks to actually downgrade to the 305, but the ease of future upgrades is the payoff. Except for some subframes, I've self mandated to not change the 305 (if it hopefully runs)
until my GP is paid off. By then I should have a couple more deploymnts & mad money saved up for a 383 swap.

If you're gonna stay sbc, why not 400? I've done it twice and it was awesome both times (for a ch**y) and not much money. Is there something people don't like about 400s that's justified?

- The 3800 is coming out for emissions reasons.
- Future upgrades awaiting paying off another car.
A 400 doesn't seem reasonable under those circumstances.

I think he's wanting me to do someting w/my Poncho 400 block back in MD. I stil have plans, but that block will most likely find it's way back into another (maybe) 77 T/A, w/teh 455 conversion rotating assembly. For now, I'd judt like to enjoy my car out of the garage for more than a temp tags worth of time.

Can't you make a 400 small block pass emissions? I'll admit that in the parts of Ohio I lived in, I didn't have to.
I did live in CA when I was in the service and got a 90 firebird to pass and an 86 IROC. both had 400s hiding under all of that wiring and vacuum hose.
The smog ***** don't typically look at block numbers when they do their visual check there.

If you pay for the engine, I'll do it now. Otherwise it waits until the GP is paid off.

If I had one, I WOULD give it to you. I certainly wouldn't use it. I've had enough of chevy's finest............
In Ohio, can you use the same type of law as CA where your engine swap comes from the same type of car, same year or newer, any engine available in the line?
In CA you can put LT1, LS1, 3800, 3.4L, etc.......
Just curious about the emissions questions......

**** e-check is going away in the Dayton/Cinci area 1 Jan. RUmor has it though, that they might bring in that crappy oxygenated gas. Yes, the same crap they had Northern VA use, where it's "cleaner", but due to crappier milage, you need to get more of it, thus negating teh point.
Of all the e-checks I've had, they never popped the hood.

So why ARE you changing engines, really. I never had a 305 that I would've traded a 3800 for. I thought it was emissions related. Was there something wrong with your engine or do you really think its gonna be better?

PCM isn't recognizubg any fuel enable signals, even w/a new pcm installed. I allready retraced all the wires invloved, and can prime the injectors w/a testor, then turn the key & have engien run off that gas.
As far as emissions go, that v6 is at least, if not cleaner than any factory TPI. Car did run w/teh 3800 init, but decided to go do it's own thing (not start). As stated in teh first post here, just about everythign for an ate swap for that I am getting the money for by selling the 3800.
