In need of advice

I have an 88' IROC with a TPI that is completly blown. Its pulled out, and now i am debating replacment options. I am thinking LT1, but need to know exactly what it entails before i buy the engine. Also am thinking about replacing the automatic with a T56. This is my first major engine work, so may need things put in to layman terms. Perferably what exactly i need on top of the engine and tranny, and what issues may come up. On a bit of a budget, so an idea on cost would be good too.

Thanks a lot for the info.

IMPO - Replace the 305 with rebuilt/new 305. Bolt your TPI right on it and get rolling for the summer!

"First major Engine Work" & "Bit of a Budget" are [IMPO] probably not a good combination if you are thinking about an LT1 swap.

The first thing you will need is lots of money. I don't know what a modest budget means but I agree with kboehringer that you should just get it slapped together and driving again. This could be as simple as a remanufactured engine and turn in your old engine for money as a core exchange.

If you want an LT-1 you might as well get looking for a '94 or later LT-1 car with improved handling, brakes, suspension, and T56 tranny. I would avoid '93 because it uses a speed density fuel delivery and does not take well to modifications without retuning the timing and fuel maps.

You can get away with an LT1/T56 swap for probably around 4500 (I'm including pricing for little things that you forget). The biggest cost you will have is finding a setup with a 6-speed. If you stay with a 4L60E you can chop about 1000-1500 off of that total I put up since that is what a 6-speed will run you right now (if it's in decent shape)

I would skip the LT1 and go LS1. Far better IMO.
