Camshaft Remove/Install Question????
Camshaft Remove/Install Question????
Hey guys, I have a 86 trans am 305. I have the top and front of the engine torn down. I'm in the process of doing the timing chain camshaft/lifters. So the question I ask is can i pull the camshaft out the front without pulling the engine??? My haynes book says i can, but the autozone repair guide says i can't. So who has done it, and what tips n tricks can you pass along. It seems like I have enough room with the radiator pulled but i'm not sure.

You should be able to. You have the new cam? Measure the length and make sure you can line it up with the front of the engine. With the rad removed you only have some bracing to deal with, shouldn't be an issue.

Sometimes it's easier to undo the motor mount bolt on one side and slightly raise one side of the engine. But I've done it without.

Re: Camshaft Remove/Install Question????
I took a cam out with the motor in the car... wasnt bad at all. although, nothing went back in because I found metal dust everywhere so out the motor came. I would plan on a full day to do the project give or take a few hours depending your level of experience.
