Which motor to build.
Hey I need some help on which way to go with building a motor. My girlfriend agree to build a race car with me, so i am taking it and running with it. I am looking at a 1986 Chevy Camaro Z28 it has a tired 305 (carb) with a t5 trans. I am planning on keeping the tranny and maybe updating it to something better. I was thinking about building a SBC406 to put in it. What you guys think.

I think the "upgrade to something better" will happen very soon to a T5 behind a 406 SBC that is raced.
T56, TH350, TH400 are all better choices for a car that is race-primary. A well-built TH350 will produce the best results; a TH400 will handle more abuse but isn't necessary and is less efficient; a manual transmission typically puts you at a disadvantage in ET racing.
Seriously consider a rear end upgrade to 12-bolt or 9". That will most likely be a significant portion of your budget.
