Solid mounts vs factory clamshells

Anyone here running solid mounts on a shp dart block? Here is the question. I know from what Ive ran into in the past is factory clamshells are side specific because k member isnt symetrical. I was looking at the moroso units and those are side specific( pads that replace rubber). I was looking also at the UMI setup with pads and clamshell replacment. However they told me those are not side specific and fit g body as well.. Kind of confused as I personally ran into this on my car with factory rubber mounts. If they are not installed ( clamshells) correctly the motor will actually be too close to one side, mine was passenger side. Swapping them made everything fit perfect, even with Hawks longtubes. So would like to hear from anyone running either the Moroso or UMI stuff. Really like the UMI stuff but dont was another issue. Im running a UMI RR k member. Thanks

I do have experience installing and driving the Morosos, and if your engine has been balanced, which in your case it should be, then I say the Morosos are a safe choice for a stock crossmember, IDK about on the UMR crossmember. Just don't try adding a solid trans mount with any automatic that has a lockup converter. Took me 2 days of that before ordering the Energy Susp. interlocking polygraphite trans mount. Never went back to solid trans mounts.

So am I off in saying the mounts are side specific? Im 99%sure they are. Umi tells me no. Im sure I saw somewhere that even the moroso are marked passenger and driver side. Thanks for the reply.

Re: Solid mounts vs factory clamshells

With GM, the rubbers are identical for both sides, and bolt to the frame. Then there was a staggering variety of different clamshells, most of which won't work in these cars. I ordered the Morosos just to avoid that mess, the Moroso frame halves are marked for which side each one goes on, then the block halves are identical. You'd want Moroso 62510 and Moroso 62610. Then just add your own new set of grade 8 bolts from your local hardware store.
I have no experience with anything from UMI. But they should have duplicated the GM mounting holes, so the Morosos should bolt to the UMI crossmember just as if it were the GM crossmember. Of course they want you to buy their mounts, so you'll have to talk with them. I'd lie and say I already had the Morosos, or I'd say a friend has a set I can have for a steak dinner, just to see how UMI would answer that.

Re: Solid mounts vs factory clamshells

Yes I went threw that whole ordeal when I couldn't get the motor to sit right and had clamshells that were not from a 3rd gen. Even if you swap the correct ones to the wrong side the motor does not sit correctly. Weird. I talked to UMI. They told me there replacement clamshells fit g body and f body. I questioned that and they told me there is no difference. I know for a fact there is a pass and drivers side. With headers on the car the difference is very easy to pick up as in my case with the incorrect ones i had about a 1/4 to the pass frame rail with one of the tubes. Couldn't even get my pinky finger in there. When I swapped to the correct thirdgen ones, on the correct side. Motor came over about 1/2 inch. I like UMIs clamshells and mounts all powdercoated black. But I dont want to find out the hard way installing the motor and finding out it doesnt work. Plus to install my Stainless works long tubes you have to lift the motor on pass side a little. All said and done Im sure they will get scuffed up and Ill be stuck with them if they dont work.

I know like you have said the moroso work and are side specific. Maybe UMI is the same setup. Whatever the difference in the clamshells I assume is made up somehow on the moroso k member pads as you said the block halfs are the same. I tried to question UMI but they were kind of vague. Just like yes they work you should have no issues. Heard that same thing about the ES poly mounts they found out it made my super ram hit the wiper motor vs rubber as they raise the motor a bit. Would like UMI to chime in just to straighten up the question. They make awesome products as my k member is a nice piece. But you cant go wrong with Moroso, they havent been in buisness this long by mistake and usually there stuff is top notch.

Re: Solid mounts vs factory clamshells

I think by '82 the Monte Carlo was using the same clamshells as the '82 Camaro, so in that way there was no difference.
With the Morosos, the difference is obvious, you can see that they offset the engine a bit.
I'm inclined to think your rubbers were age-fatigued, while your poly mounts just put the engine where it was supposed to be. So maybe the finalizing of the SuperRam design was done on aged rubbers? IDK.

Re: Solid mounts vs factory clamshells

Sorry for the delay in response. My rubbers are brand new gm pieces. As is the poly ones I have. Maybe the super ram was done on sagging mounts. I know the UMI mounts say for g body too. Maybe they are the same. But from my experience thirdgen clamshells are side specific.
