Engine upgrade ideas.

I just bought a 92 trans am convertible, automatic 305 tpi. Engine is bad and I plan to get a long block. So here are my questions for those who may have been in my same shoes. First let me relay that I want to keep the fuel mileage close to stock or better.

Option 1. Long block 305 and keep stock or mild upgrades.

Option 2. Long block 350, and what ever is needed for that swap.

Re: Engine upgrade ideas.

Would go 350. Depends on what mods, you're looking for. Going faster always costs money. 87-95 engines can still be found, or a crate engine for under $1500. (two bolt mains). About 2G's for 350/350hp or 383. Everything should bolt on for a direct swap. if you're going 305 you'll spend more than that to get the same hp.

Re: Engine upgrade ideas.

If I was to put the 350 in It would stay stock. I would buy the knock sensor, injectors, eprom, headers and that's it. I will be driving this 80 miles per day so I'm not looking for high performance.

Re: Engine upgrade ideas.

The 350 will probably give you better mileage, because you will not have to put your foot in it as much as the lame 305.

Re: Engine upgrade ideas.

I'm a 350 fan myself. My MPG is pretty good and is pretty mild mannered.

Re: Engine upgrade ideas.

What fuel mileage do you see on the highway and in the city?

Re: Engine upgrade ideas.

I'm getting around 20 highway miles per gallon. Don't ever drive around in the city so I'm not sure what my MPGs are for that. I just did a much needed tuneup so that should help bump those numbers up a little.

Re: Engine upgrade ideas.

A 5.3/4L60E pullout might also be worth looking into.

Re: Engine upgrade ideas.

If it's not a simple bolt in swap where all the harnesses and everything stays the same I am not interested. I've done a 22R swap on a Toyota that didn't turn out well and a 2.5 swap on a Mazda 626
