cheap and legal exhaust (my friend's V6 sounds meaner than my V8, its just not right)
I have an '89 Camaro with a 305 TBI. I am looking to put in headers and a new exhaust system. My cat's getting pretty old so it could use being replaced. I'm looking for something pretty straight-forward bolt-on. I would love to find something that I could do all of the installation myself (except maybe some minor welding).
Now, here's the catch, I'm a poor colloge student. I'm looking to go the cheapest route about this. It's a 305 TBI, so it's not going to be the quickest car no matter what I do, but I would like to get a decent performance boost, but I really would love a good LOUD V8 sound. Any suggestions? What exactly am I going to need? Where do I get good kits? Etc?

Getting a cat to replace yours directly would not be a good idea. You really want a larger one.
The "poor" part is going to get you, though. Hedman makes a set of shorty hedders for about $120, the matching y-pipe and Catco '86-'90 TPI single-cat application direct-fit cat (what you really want) will each cost you another $120. JC Whitney has a decent cat-back for about $150.
Short of getting take-off parts, that's probably about the best you're going to do with new parts, price-wise.
