Do i need this or not?

Well I was cleaning up some stuff under the hood tonight and I was by the master cylinder when i looked down at my exhaust manifold. I figured i would find out the sucking noise that is coming from the general area. I don't know what this part is but i know it has to do with emissions. It is the small silver thing that sits on top of the four small silver tubes that run into your exhaust manifold. There is a large vacum line that connects to one end and it looks like a ball in the middle of the part. The other end plugs into the nut where your four small silver tubes run into one. I ran the car with it off and it just doesn't seem to idle right, (rpms stay around 1500) and some water or some sort of other liquid runs out of the vacuum line in very very small amounts. (Water maybe) Can anyone help me figure out what this part is called, also is it needed by emissions to pass? otherwise any input on how to bypass the whole darn thing.

its the aluminum air pipes for the smog pump. Those lines are the conduits that carry the air from the pump on initial startup to help burn off excess hydrocarbons while the motor is warming up. It sounds as though you may have an exaust leak or a damaged air manifold since you here noises coming form that area.

Oh, and yes you do need it if youre subject to visual inspection. Technically its a federal offence to remove the emmisions controls.

darn. I promised my dad id help him do some construction at his office on saturday. If i can somehow manage to get done early ill stop by.

Heh, like the sig. Lately it seems that gm is really neglecting the crowd taht actually likes their cars to look like cars and not toys with little go cart engines with their new model lineups. Only thing on the chevy lots (other then the vets) lately is stupid cavalires and blah family sedans with plain jane v6's in them.
