How do I get the honeycomb thingie out of my cats?

I tried hammering it but it's harder than I thought it would be. What did you guys do?

I didn't really want to gut them, but they're making an annoying rattling noise anyways..

BTW is it normal that only 1/2 of the cat is filled with the honeycomb stuff?

Thanks

cut the cats shell in half..... along the seam.

put straight pipe in place of cat.

weld cat shell back together over the pipe.

this way, your exhaust wont sound like ****. it also wont lose volicity from going into the larger cat, and then creating backpressure as it tries to go back into the smalled cat exit.

use a big stick AND a hammer Just keep bashing it and it'll eventually start to break apart.

crow bar and hammer......i would recommend the straight pipe through the cat. sounds a little better and smells better.

then replace them... not being rude, just stating the obvious....

seriously though, if the light rattle bothered you, the noise it'll make gutted will drive you batty...

if you can get a cutoff wheel, the method i mentioned works great. it looks like a cat, but it flows and sounds like a straight exhaust.... no rattles either.

I'm just selling the car and I want to fix it before I try selling it. I can live with the rattle, but the next owner might not want to..

Alright, I just gutted them, wow that was easy. I didn't know they were only a couple inches thick, I thought the whole cat was filled with the honeycomb stuff. The car seems to breath easier now, but is definitely noiser. I haven't driven it yet, can't wait to find out if it has more power. I think I'm probably just going to order a couple of the Catco cats since I found them for $30 on ebay.

How so? Loss of power or something? I've never heard of ill-effects from doing this (besides emissions and noise!)

i guess this is a little late now but i would have checked the ehat shields for the rattle before i just hammered all the honeycomb out of it, thats what mine turned out to be, i found this out AFTER i hollowed it but i was planning to do it anyway...

I just had my dummy cats installed and it ran great until I shut the car off for an hour and a half. Now it idles for crap, is extremely rich (my block learn is 108 and my integrator in 80) and has no power.

It may be coincidence but it happened right after I had them replaced.

Gutted cats wouldn't have any effect on the engine running stoich.

Check the o2 sensor out. Maybe the shop disconnected it or fried it with a torch. Gutted cat would not have any effect though.

Doesn't the ECM ignore the o2 sensor in open loop?

If I have a high flow cat and a gutted cat, which one should I run for the best sound and performance?

Shouldn't be a difference, at least noticeable... right?

My car also did this when I had it running the exhaust with nothing after the cat. I checked my o2 sensor, it was fine. I put my exhaust back on and the car runs fine again. I think the lack of backpressure from the open exhaust caused the ecm to go crazy. Just my 2 cent.
